Hy guys long time lurker, first time part-taker-in-something-er.

I might try a theme and variation.
for the sake of voicing, I changed the key of the theme to to Bb, I doubt that's against the rules though, and i did it for handier brass voicing.

I find theme and variation works well for writing scores for short games/movies/whatever; the would be producer ends up with a palate of slightly different textures which he/she can use for different scenes.

it's a very well written theme by the way.
well good luck.

it's in D minor. I don't think you can make it major. and D minor is a brass-friendly key. Trumpets only have one sharp.

To B-flat minor?

Normally when people just say Bb, there's an implied major

Sure, I'll give it a shot. No idea what the genre will end up as, so expect anything.

in most cases yes, but music jargon is notoriously imprecice.
To transpose is to change the key only, and never to change mode, therefore a melody either stays minor or stays major reguardless of what key it's transposed to. As such, one need only mention the new key without having to specify major/minor for a second time.

anyways, here's my offer, I'm not sure If I'm entirly satisfied with it, I thinking about adding a 5th variation with full orchestra, but I'm not sure it would spoil things. I reckon i alslo coudl beef up the up tempo bit with strummed spanish guitar and maybe some harmony for the flute/whistle,

It's voices for string orchestra and various soloists, including in one variant, a Drone/reed instrument.

Sounds pretty interesting, I might give it a shot or two, but if I cant be able to finish it before the first of August I wont have time to enter, if that is the case, could I enter as a judge? I have plenty of knowledge about sound engineering and music theory, so I guess I could help you...

Btw, perhaps I got the wrong mp3 file but isnt the key of the song F major?

D minor is the relative minor of F major. They both have 1 flat, but they are by no means the same thing.

I found the theme a great rock to lean against, it's well written and aslong as what your doing "agrees" with it you'll not produce anything aweful.
sometime your givin a bad theme, and you really have to bend over backwards to fit it into any musical context.

I agree, but harmonicaly speaking, the key of the song isn't D minor but F major, otherwise it would have a C sharp in it.

In my opinion the relatives in music are useless, scales should be completely based on harmony because otherwise it causes confusion...

Harmonically speaking, D minor wouldn't have a C sharp unless it was harmonic minor. Natural minor has natural C as it's seventh note.

Also, D minor and F major are both the same scale, only with different starting points.

Precisely. They're the same notes. It's just the Ionian and Aeolian modes guys. Seriously, it's pretty simple.

Hehe. Greek terminology <3

Good for you. While you were doing that, I was already done my submission, making minor changes, as i will continue doing through the end of the competition.

Count me in, I'm just wondering if we can put another theme over it, or make a counter-melody (I'm not sure if it's called that way in english). And I'll put a 12 bar shuffle improvisation section in the middle of the song, if it isn't too much...

I have no problems with either of those ideas.

Excellent contest idea! I've been wanting there to be more creative contests like this :)

Will all the submissions be viewable at the end? I'd really love to hear all the different ideas everyone has for it. To me that sounds like one of the most exciting parts of this contest!

And what's with the bad vibe in the posts so far? This guy has given us a fun chellange to do together and discuss. Let's have some fun with it :D

I'm giving it a go in 4/4 time, but currently having a bit of trouble getting the motif variation to sound right without lots of changes to the theme. I might have the changes, but play it again in 3/4 time later on.

I'm in

I wanted to do a more classical thing with it, but after talking to my buddy who's coming back from basic training soon, I decided to go with an army march type of feel.

It's gonna be in 4/4 time, I'll have it done in a couple days.

I only have notation software, so mine probably won't win, but I'll give it a try anyway, and maybe it'll give others ideas or inspiration.

I really love this idea of an orchestration contest. It's a great theme, too.

That'd be awesome! And possibly some constructive feedback on what the honorable mentions strong and weak points were.
