Why is the U.S. wasting money 2004-01-30 19:01:32 Reply

Should the U.S. really be wasting all this money on space when the economy is so bad. Is George Bush so ignorant that he can’t see that the money should go to something else right now (ex. The schools, cities, armed forces). This I believe is one reason that I think George Bush is a bad president and should lose the election. But for every person that does not like him there always someone who does.

What the fuck are you talking about? Our economy isnt doing that bad anymore, and the funding for NASA isnt a huge amount when compared to the Governments overall amount of revenue.

Are you so ignorant that you think funding NASA is a waste of money?

Space technology has done much over the years to improve our lives. Think of all the things you use on a daily basis that have some roots in space technology. Space exploration can only make more discoveries that can help us on Earth.

Actually BWS, Bush wants to give over 500 billion to Naza so they can go to the moon and mars. 500 billion is 1/8th of what we take in.

I heard about him wanting to do that in the near future, but I didnt hear anything about the estimated costs. I believe you, but do you have a link; im curious and want to read it actually. Now, this of course is a large amount of money, but I highly doubt that the costs will be front loaded. Ill bet that the expenses are paid over a number of years and if so it really isnt that bad. Besides, space exploration is great for science and mankind overall.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/01/28/space.senate.ap/index.html and there are a bunch of related articles that talk about it too.

I'm all for science and exploration, but there isn't much more we can learn from Mars, at least not anything worht 500 billion. Thats 500 billion dollars we could use to help jobs or something like that, or maybe reduce that gaping massive deficiet.

Well, I read the articles. The 500 billion is the estimated amount for the entire program. So, the amount would be spread over these years. NASA spends around 15-16 billion per year, according to the records found on NASA's site. So, it isnt anywhere near 1/8 of our countries revenue. You know, it is a shitload of money, but im still for it. And we can learn a lot from Mars actually because it would allow us to study the dynamics behind the solar systems evolution; this I learned from my Astronomy class, not on the sites I read. And besides, the deficit isnt that big of a deal when you think about it. Also, if youre interested, they will be putting out financial information on this Feb. 2.

Because it has no practical use whatsoever. It is nice, true, to see the skies, etc. but it isn't a very practical way of spending cash.

And your all foolish if you think Bush has planned out NASA's program for the next ten years. They've wanted to get to Mars by 2010-2012 for years now.

Still foolish, it just proves that Clinton was a bit of a fool too. I think I use the word "fool" too much.

Ya, well Clinton let the pentagon and NASA do pretty much whatever.. Although, I'm not sure how much any president has affected the actual NASA program, besides adding or cutting funding...?

Tell me exactly what good it is gonna do us when we send droids to Mars. The only useful technology concerning space is sattelites, for communication. That's about the only thing that really has any use for us on earth. How is exploring the moon and Mars gonna help us?

I agree. Bush is spending too much. We're losing money and all he wants to do is spend. We don't need to spend $11 Billion dollars to send a man to Mars ($11 Billion wouldn't be nearly enough anyway). The Space Race is over, let's start investing in things we need, like education. Really, we shouldn't be spending at all.

How does it help us [read: the public] in a practical way then, taking into account the massive amounts of cash it sucks up. I'm not talking about satellites, etc, they're useful, i'm talking about putting a bloke on Mars. How is that useful to ME?

No, no, no. NASA isn't a waste of money - the pentagon gets plenty of valuable information, aiding immensely in the militerization of space.

Fix the problems on this planet before creating new ones up in space.

agreed.

In a way, it makes sense for a republican administration to crash the economy. It would be reason enough to cut a lot of the government funded programs republicans don't like.

Another reason Bush might be spending all this money is b/c he's stupid and actually thinks it will help the country. Probably some sort of moral booster, or just a distraction from all the shit he's done.

Im gonna say it is for one of three reasons. To distract people from problems on the home front and give them something to wave flags about, we need more space to put our bloody garbage and toxic waste or he is planning to build a new prison camp to hold illegal combatants, Sadam Hussien and high level democrats.

The man chocked on a pretzel and you think he is going to think far enough ahead; an elaborate scheme to take all of the high profile democrats in the world and shove them in space? I’m not sure whether that or Bush’s tax cut was more half-assed…

Methinks Bush is pulling a Reagan and is riding the media into the next election, issues don't matter if you're watching television.

while i think space tech and investing in our armed forces r wonderful ideas, there're definitely more urgent needs in our country. for example, thanks to governor arnold and president george double-u-bush, i have to pay an extra $150~$300 for my college education each quarter. for example, if i paid $2000 this quarter, i gotta pay $2222 the next one..... $2500 the next... $2800 the next... etc. now how the hell am i suppose to want to go to school and study if i gotta worry about my bills left and right? thankfully my parents r willing to pay for it, but what about people whose parents won't pay or if they just don't have the money?

and oh yeah, firing teachers left and right (big issue in san diego inner city schools)... sure we save some money now, but we're gonna have to build a lot more prisons in the future if we don't give the kids a good education today.

I hear ya. I think more should be spent on education so we can educatate more people well . If we can do that, more steps to solving world problems can happen. But that's just me...

So, considering how much of a neo-nazi he is, he will indeed be going for a Raegen.
