I'm trying to create a sig, giving the illusion of transparency without too great of a loss of quality. Attached is an image with the two color discrepancies--on top is the normal BBS background with the color code 25272d, while on the bottom is my attempted recreation with the color code 1c1d21.

I use the eyedropper tool to copy the color of the background, then add it to my sig, but whenever uploaded, the color becomes significantly darker.

I'm using Photoshop CS3 on a Mac, if that's relevant.

What format are you saving in?

I'm a regular thread killer. If you see my post at the bottom of a page, chances are there are no more posts below it.

Thanks, that song is stuck in my head.

Have you tried print-screening a post, then dropping the background?

(Or is that what you meant up there? If so, I'm an idiot and ignore me. It's just how I have done mine in the past.)

Yeah, I had that exact same problem with my old sig before. Your sig will display fine to Windows users, it's just that the Mac's color palette (and in turn, PS CS3's default palette) that makes it seem darker.

For example, below is my old sig. It'll look fine to people using a Windows or Adobe palette, but it'll look darker to a Mac palette.

That's what I have essentially been doing, but whenever it's uploaded, the image becomes darker. The image on my computer is the right color, whereas once uploaded it becomes darker.

.jpg. Also, I have to bring the quality down to 11 (rather than 12) so that it meets the 40kb cap. Could this be the problem?

Just make the sig clear for real. It's much easier.

Oh wait, you're using Photoshop, not Flash...

I have the same problem with my profile picture. It only happened when I updated Firefox to 3.5. That's gotta be the problem.

Yeah, I had to tweak some settings in CS3, then I opened the image once again with different settings. I think the file size was then reduced, so I was able to save without lowering image quality. I have no idea how that all worked though...

Photoshop is (and pretty much all Adobe programs are) a strange, but forgiving beast. Sometimes you'll try to do something stupid in it, and the picture will come out to be much better than you expected.

Trust me, I know.

JPEG artifacts are the cause of the problem with both the pic you supplied and Rig's Profile pic. This kind of variation is normal for lossy compression. The difference between Windows and Mac is monitor variation/calibration (possibly colour profile variation as well, but they both show 32bit fine now) and the difference between Firefox 3.0 and 3.5 is Firefox 3.5 now support color profiles and assumes a default of sRGB.

I generally use GIF to match up the backgrounds because it uses lossless compression and while it causes dithering or banding when indexed from a pic with over 256 colours it does not introduce noise in flat shaded areas.

Yeah, it's #25272D
For anyone who has Flash you can just make make the window so it's not maximized and move it over a bit, and then click on the colour tool in Flash like you would if you were going to change the colour of the brush or fill or line or whatever, and then click on the colour on the webpage you want. In this case the Newgrounds background.
I don't know if it sounds confusing but it works for me.
