Gravity and pressure is what makes water flow and what makes toilets flush.

I'll have to agree, the average poster on here doesn't have much logic/common sense going for them. Just like the saying, common sense isn't common. Let's now make it; common sense isn't common on the NG BBS.

yes that's right.

And it amazes me how many people actually don't know that toilets use/don't use electricity. It also amazes me that I am one of those people. D:

There are different ways water comes into people's homes. Many people have public water that comes in from pressurized water mains that run down their streets. The water is either pressurized by water towers, or water held in a tank on top of a hill (basically the same thing), or pumped through the water main system, or both.

If you lose power and have this type of water system the toilet will continue to operate normally.

Other people have well water. This requires an electrical pump to bring the water up and into a tank where it is pressurized. Depending on the set up it may still work for awhile after losing power, but once the tank loses pressure your toilet will stop filling, faucets will stop running, etc.

I grew up with both types of systems. My parents have well water, so when we lost power the first thing we did was fill a jug with water and we didn't flush the toilets.

I live in town and I have public water so I can run water all I want when the power is out.

Also some people have toilets that require power to flush if they are located below their main drain. The pump is like a garbage disposal and will usually grind up whatever is in the toilet and pump it into the main drain line. Toilets above the drain line obviously can flow into it thanks to gravity.

I thought this kind of shit was common sense, but I guess today's youth has no fucking clue how things work if it isn't on their computer or TV.

Sorry for dub post...but did y'all not see this?!?! Seriously it seems as though everyone ignored that....WADE FULP fucking told you guys how it actually works and you don't notice/ignore??!
I could see right off the bat it was the almighty Wade when I noticed his ultra white text compared to our light gray. And Wade knows his shit. Listen to him guise srsly lol. He took time to answer the question and no one responds, acknowledges, or does anything...for a page and a half!

Well what Wade says certainly makes sense, and therefore the OP was actually correct in what he said, as later he did say that they use wells, but that (as Wade said) would stop working eventually. Also, I live in England, and we hardly ever get hurricanes, earthquakes, and we never get volcanoes. Actually, we just don't get power cuts.

Open the top of the toilet. Look inside. There shouldn't be anything electrical in there. If there is, run. It will self destruct in ten seconds.

I'll make you a sig. Pm me or visit this thread.

How do you people think water towers work? They use pumps to get the water to that height in the first place, which, in a power outage, can fail.

The only reason you don't see a difference in a power outage is because the towers are designed to hold enough water to supply the community for a day or longer, and power outages are usually resolved in that amount of time. And if there was something seriously wrong and it would take much longer, they could always use generators to keep the system going since water supply is a top priority.

In places without water towers, or pumping stations that provide it for you, you'd need another way to get the water into the building. A private pump that brings the water from a well into the building and stores it somewhere where the normal pressure system can do its thing. Just like how a high-rise building will have at least one little water tower on its roof, since the city system can't generate the pressure needed to get water up to the top of each and every building.

The only problem with this kid's understanding of the system is that he seemed to think each fixture had its own pump under the floor, instead of having one pump bring it into the house and store it somewhere, where it could then be delivered to each fixture with pressure.

If he does have a system that uses well water and a private pump, instead of a public pumping/water tower system... The reason the toilet still worked was probably because there was still water in the house tank. If he kept flushing the toilet or using other fixtures in the house, the water in the tank would eventually lose its pressure as it runs out and they would all stop working. When the power goes out, it just stops the pump from bringing water to the tank, it doesn't stop the pressure/gravity process from delivering that water to the fixtures.

Do you know how to get a coon out of a cheese box?

Yes, he showered us with his infinite toilet wisdom, and for that, we were all better off. Or at least, the three people who read what he said.

I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they would greet me with cries of hate.
