You can smoke anything that burns. All you're basically doing is setting it on fire and inhaling the smoke. So could smoke a CD case if you wanted, although it would be extremely bad for you.

Are you sure he wasn't smoking FROM an apple? They make good disposable pipes when you smoke weed, and I'm sure you inhale some of the burnt apple when you light it up.
