somone asked the population of earth, i said probly around 4 billion, and my friend said probly around 8 billion

the answer was about 6 billion

so i was like huh we were both wrong and he says

"but your more wrong"

does that fucking matter, either way were both wrong

the resulting argument branched off in many different direction but it prety much all boiled down to this...

NG, when speaking about numbers/math/stats, if your not 100% right, are you more right than anyone else, or are you both simply 100% wrong?

Sometimes, depending on your guesses and what the actual answer is, you can be more or less wrong. It all really depends on the context, too. If the correct answer to a question is, let's say, 10, then the person who guessed 3 would be "more" wrong than the person who guessed closer. Context, again, comes into play and what is actually being discussed. Sure, they'd both be wrong, but we can pull the "at least" card here, as in "at least he was closer than you."

In this case, you were both equally wrong, since the difference between your estimates and the actual answer was two billion for each of you.

The only way someone could be "more wrong" then someone else is if someone else's answer was partly true.

You were both equally close to the number. In mathematical order, when there is an equilibrium of numbers the answer rounds to the higher number. Like when rounding 4.5 to the nearest whole number you would say "5". However, it still does not change the fact that both of your answers where equally distant from the answer which makes you both as wrong as each other.

But the answer is more around 7 billion, but certainly over 6 billion so either way you were still wrong.

In real life, alot of things have to be approximated. Where I'm at now in maths, almost everything which real applications involves approximations, which is disappointing.

Even the population of the Earth has to be approximated. There is no easy way they could know the exact population, so they look for the best approximation they can. Which would mean that, if you were further off, you were really more wrong.

Then again, your friend was ridiculously wrong too, and most people know the world's population to a much better degree (last I heard it was somewhere around 6.5 billion, not sure how right that is anymore). So you're both stupid, for not knowing the population of Earth, and for arguing about it.

Your friend was closer because it is actually a little over 6 billion. Meaning you were 2.? billion over and he was only 1.?. And yes, it does matter.
