PS3 Slim + price cut [rumor]

Yeah, the PS3 price cut rumors have been active for years now, but some recent hub-bub has stated that Sony plans on dropping the price of the original model to make way for its release of the PS3 Slim in the fall. Some sites speculate the release of the PS3 slim to be this month, but that seems too sudden.

Here's an article speculating a July release of the PS3 Slim. Apparently Sony has given two Taiwanese companies the green light to manufacture the new model.

Personally I'm not putting any trust into these rumors as so many PS3 rumors have been a let-down, but if it happens, great.

Same as the PS2 slim, humanity just likes things that are smaller than they were originally.

Actuallly the PS2 slim had more advantages in terms of hardware compared to the bulk, other than it being slim. A pop-up disc reader, and it doesn't buzz nearly as loud.

There have been over 7 different rumors about price cuts and at least 4 about the slim. A july release? Tell me what month we are in right now?

The only reason I have any curiousity is because BestBuy is giving great new 80 GB bundles to get rid of stock for what could be the next new PS3.

That's what makes me skeptical about the rumor, but there are articles which write it off as being plausible.

That's a sign something may happen. Just like how the 360 20GB Pro dropped $100 so they could make way for the more high-end versions.

I'm about 99.9% sure that the PS3 Slim is real and is release this Fall. Too many pictures and rumors for it not to be true. It's also the only way Sony can really afford to cut the price, which is also a certainty. Sony projected their sales to be up this fiscal year (I think by about 30%) despite slower console sales during the first half of this year. They obviously have something pretty big planned.

You can either wait for a probable $100 price drop, or get an amazing 80 GB bundle with a controller, MGS4, and KZ2.

The slim is only going to be 120 GB anyway, so it is fucking useless to me. 45 NM chips though.

Anyway I believe there will be a slim/price cut this year. I believe this because there is a rumor about Microsoft cutting the 60 gig and making the 120 the standard xbox 360 around the same time. They obviously know something is up and/or expect Sony to make a move so they are ready to move when Sony does.

Anyone in the market for a PS3, wait for the official announcement of the Slim. If the specs and price are more agreeable to you, go for it. If not, grab one of the last 80 GB models. That way you'll get the best deal either way.

Yes. 120 GB seems to be what the Slim will be using. And those handy 45 NM chips. I won't be buying this. But the white PSP Go? Yes.

If they do this, and the price is dropped to the standard Pro pricing, then I'm going to buy one.

I had a 10 gig for years and only have a 20 gig harddrive now, so being able to pay Pro pricing and get a 120 gig hard drive, another controller, a headset, a month of gold (They come with that I think?) and possibly a black xbox and game (most likely lego indy/KFP or something) seems like a good deal to me.

Yeah there is also a rumor for a firmware update that will give all PS3 backwards compatibility with PS2 without that one chip that name escapes me at the moment in a couple of weeks. Interesting how rumors start and sometimes don't come true, though I pray to God the PS3 backwards compatibility is true. I own a newer PS3 with no chip.

That'd be nice, since backwards compatibility is a big buying point for me. Will it be able to play original PlayStation games as well?

Every PS3 can play PS1 games already. That's easy enough to do through software emulation.

If the rumors about the price drop are true, then I will definatly buy a PS3. Here's what I want to know though, should I buy the 80 GB PS3 or the PS3 Slim? I would much rather get the cheaper console, but I don't know if I will need the extra 40 GB that comes with the PS3 slim. Anyway, which do you guys think will be the better deal?
