I know many of these answers, but the problem is I can't really tell you why. For example, I know the rules of grammar, but can't explain or tell you why. I just do. It's weird.

I'd probably fail that test, but that's only because I've never been in an American class and that my first language is French.

YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE.

They've dumbed down the grade school curriculum in the last couple of decades. Back in the 60s and 70s, all sorts of shitty social movements replaced what had worked with what simply "sounded good". Kids in 1895 memorized long lists of historical dates and grammatical rules, spat them out on tests, and at least remembered the ideas, if not the exact wording, many years later. Kids in 1995 were taught about shit like "tolerance" and "acceptance" while simultaneously being indoctrinated with the idea that everything done by the white race is worthless because of slavery and a few episodes of genocide (despite those being common throughout the history of all races, and the white race in fact being the first race to abolish slavery). The students of 1895 went on to elect great men like Teddy Roosevelt to public office, and to build America into a world empire and a world power during the first few decades of the 20th century. The students of 1995 elected George W. Bush and (even worse) Karl Mar- I mean, Barack Hussein Obama, and ruined everything that the people of one century before worked so hard to build.

That being said, I failed that test because I never learned those things.

I'd say it's like teaching your kid to walk. You don't tell him how to, you just shove him and he starts walking. I guess it's like he sees everyone standing and does that too, like you hear/read everyone using proper grammar and it's imprinted how to in your head.

It's called the elevator something or other, if you step into an elevator and everyone is facing to the back of it, then you will do.

I know some of this stuff, but not all of it. Yes, they do still teach some of this stuff in school.

I agree with the last poster though--if I were able to study beforehand I could ace the test. Not so sure the students are so smart now anyways. I mean, Kansas did ban the teaching of evolution for several years. I guess they had to refer to the asteroid belt as "God's potato patch" or something.

That is some complicated stuff right there.

but it goes to show that kids back then were more equipped and were more competent in various issues that required real logic and intelligence.

The problem with alot of these is that they are dated. At the time of the test certain things were more relevant, or newer and more common knowledge than current day. Also we have changed the names of certain things and discovered more variations on one of them.
