When I get bored I examine the loose change in my pocket. I especially look at the dates printed on each coin, and try and find the oldest one I can.

It's pretty sad actually, but vaguely interesting.

Below is a 20p from 1983. Imagine how much this coin has seen in the 26 years of its life. Perhaps it was dropped on the floor during the Bradford riots. Maybe it even went to the Falklands, or Iraq. Maybe some fat guy shoved it up his ass and now I'm handling it.

It makes one wonder.

now show me your old coins.

My old coins have passed.

I just get the pennies that everyone has "used".

You could figure out a lot just from some simple tests. As long as you don't clean it, you can probably find a lot of stuff actually on the coin, which would tell you where the coin as been.

What I do when I'm bored and have change in my pocket is examine the dates and try to think of something interesting in history that happened in that year.
Which is sadder than your thing, I guess.

I found a couple of 1p coins from the decimalisation switchover. Instead of 'one penny' written across the top, they had 'new penny'.

God damn I was all excited about some new fetish you had :(

Anyway, I just checked my shrapnel and I've got a penny piece from 1973 in my wallet...

Just think, the oldest pennies are only 1971, so this is packing it.

A while ago I found a penny dated 1948, with the image of King George VI and the inscription "George VI Dei Gratia Rex".
I would put up a picture, but I can't find the damned thing.

I find looking at coins cool sometimes, but it sucks when thats your dad's hobby, 3 years ago he bought me 2,000 pennies off of E-Bay that we could look at and date.. Still working on that...

Is street art allowed in the art portal?//[.haC?k]Fruitbasket

I have a 1954 50 centimes piece in my 'before Euro' stash (50 centimes= +/- 1 euro cent)
I found it on the street a few years ago.

I'm sure you can have ancient coins as a collector's item.

I have a quarter from 1928, it's really scuffed and in an overall poor quality so it's probably worth fuck all, but I like to collect old silver quarters from before they made the change to a copper nickle blend. When this quarter was minted WWI had only been over for ten years and and WWII was still decade off. Television hadn't been invented yet and if you tried to explain computers people would called you a witch an thrown their feces at you (as was accustomed in those days). It's actually a really cool design, I wonder why they decided to go with George Washington's ugly mug. Dude already had the dollar.

I've got a jar I save for wheat pennies. I only have seven, but in the rare event I find more I'm prepared. It's funny, because I do the same thing.
