Religion and the year

I heard while watching Dara O'Briain do stand up that different religions have different counters for what year it is.

Eg: Largely in the west it's 2009AD as Christianity is accepted as the west's official religion. The Jewish year is 5000 and something, I think.

So, am I the only one who doesn't get how this system works? Can anyone enlighten me?

Jesus was (born) about 2009 years ago so it's 2009, they started their calenders at a different time.

Latin class, Annnus Domni or something like that, means year of our lord or year of our master.
Our Latin teacher told us what B.C. meant. Don't remember but it doesn't mean before christ its latin as well.

There isn't a 'system', people just believe different things, and they count the years starting from a significant time in their religion or nation's history.

North Koreans consider the 'beginning' to be the birth date of their former president Kim Il-Sung. It's something like the year 60 today.

Because of the influence that Christianity has had on how the world counts the years, A.D. is now known as C.E., which stands for Common Era. And B.C. is now B.C.E.; Before Common Era.

AD isn't after death, because then his death would happen straight after he was born.

What I mean by the original post was that isn't it kind of stupid to have different areas of the world saying that it's different years depending on religion? I think that the title year should be dependant on scientific knowledge rather then religion despite the fact that it's an over 5000 year old tradition. Just seems to me like another excuse for the religions of the world to argue.

I use B.C.E. or C.E., which means Before Common Era and Common Era or Before Christian Era and Christian Era.

Yeah, that's what B.C.E. and C.E. are for.

BC means Before Christ, but the last term for it is Ante Christam.

Nobody is talking about 'getting rid of' B.C. and A.D. because they are religious. The reason people are using the modern alternatives is because it's the best way of avoiding religious confrontation and aggression when speaking publicly.

I guess the only place that you could go where the title of the year actually matters would be the middle or far east, and even then commucation for most people would consist entirely of shouting and waving their arms. Or shooting at them.

Actually it's "Anno Domini" which means" year of our lord" in latin, although I used to thing that's what it meant, but that wouldn't make sense considering Jesus died around 33 AD.

So what I'm saying is that 2009 AD would be Year of our lord 2009 or 2009th year of our lord. Something like that.

I was confused by the fact that there are several different counters depending on what part of the world you happen to be in. You have to admit, saying it's 2009 on one side of the world and 3309 on the other side of the world sounds like a really stupid idea on paper.
