I've seen that you can purchase complete tutorial dvd's on audio programs for like, 50 bucks or less. Is there any advantage of that over just looking some up on youtube?

I think it's much better to learn from your own research (being looking for tutorials, asking people).
Also, why would I PAY for something I can find for free, legally?
The community way of learning things together is much more fun in my opinion.

Software companies are deliberately skimping on decent user manuals, just so they can charge people out the ass for their tutorials. I say check Youtube. It's free, and there's some damn good how-to's on there. Besides, whatever happened to the DIY or trial and error ethic with artists/musicians?

I pretty much learned everything I needed to know through trial and error, and asking a few composers/producers on other forums I frequent. That, and the occasional youtube video.
Go with what's cheap. You're an artist, for Chrissake.

Go for Youtube unless you've got money to burn, they probably have just as good of information anyway.

Even if youtube doesn't have what you're looking for, or a good tutorial, go google one or something. Don't be such lazy ass - not calling anyone, just spitting it out as a general statement - and google it or something. Read a tutorial, it doesn't have to be video to be good. I've found a lot of helpful things just by putting in some magic keywords, often times better and more in depth then a video tutorial.

those expensive tutorials can do wonders for that annoying wad of cash in your pocket. In fact its a great remedy for that cumbersome hunk of bills!

I've checked out tutorials for audio software just for the hell of it, and sometimes I was pretty damn shocked at what they included.
A friend showed me a (very expensive) video tutorial pack for cubase where most of the things demonstrated were done in a downright wrong and inefficient way. I've seen videos from commercial tutorials for modeling software where the guy shooting the video obviously had very little idea of the basic concepts behind the software he was using! Since they're aimed at beginners, tutorials like this would teach bad practice without question.
Everything I've seen and heard about pretty much any company that makes commercial tutorials makes me think they're scamming more than anything else. Free online tutorials are much better, because they're made by people passionate about the software, not people trying to get money out of you.
