Oh please, the Qu'Ran encourages violence and hatred, and whether muslims actually practice it is insignificant. The religion is based on violence, what do you expect to happen?

It says that violence is wrong and you should not kill someone, no matter what religion that person is.

That's what the muslim world would like nonmuslims to believe, yes, but anyone who's read the koran, like myself, can plainly see otherwise.

"Fighting is obligatory for you, much as you dislike it." (Surah 2:216)

"Believers, take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends." (Surah 5:51)

"Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme." (Surah 8:36-)

"...make war on the leaders of unbelief...Make war on them: God will chastise them at your hands and humble them. He will grant you victory over them..." (Surah 9:12-)

The Koran teaches violence in the same way that the Bible teaches that you can stone people to death if they work on a Sunday, in that it's there, but anyone with a brain ignores it.

No, it doesn't. The Koran is based on violence, the Muslim faith is based on self-propagation by force throughout the world.

It's nice to assume the Bible is equally violent, but it really isn't..if you had read either you'd know this.

So, what does the Korna say that is violent?

I did an essay on Islam for my Humanities class, and I'll have to disagree with what was said about the Muslims. The religion was based on spreading the word of Allah, which sometimes meant violence, but some groups submitted (there's a play on words for you) without much hassle. The Muslims did live 'side-by-side' peacefully with the Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians-- the people of 'the book'-- they just had something against the Pagans.

You can't deny that the history of Islam is violent, but don't forget about the history of Christianity and its crusades against the Muslims.

The Muslims that we know are the Sunni and Shi'ite, and the Shi'ites were the opposition of the 'real' (for lack of a better word) Muslims. The 'real' Muslims would never attack each other, which is why and how it spread so quickly. They were constantly expanding outwards.

When two groups with different ways of thought think they're right, someone is going to die.

Again, the Qu' Ran (Koran, Coran) and the Bible are based on how you interpret them, or how you're told to interpret them.

(I recommend furthering your education after highschool, it makes you feel smart when you can ramble on about such things that you might not know otherwise.)

just like the Bible the koran has been put into every language even aribic in hundreds of different ways. it all has to do with the political motives of a publisher or the religius leader that is transcribing it. I have in discusion groups on race relations talked to Muslims about what the Koran says and every one that i have talked to has stories about how they have run into people wo look down on something they do because of the interpritation of the Islamic rules in there copy of the Koran.

In the Quran you can only fight people in self-defence or in the defence of Islam that's it.

How are you to know, you aren't a Muslim yourself. You only see these words in high school but did you take a doctorate in Muslim studies or go to an unbiased source?

I didn't see these words in highschoo;, it was for a university research essay. My source was the library (W. Montgomery Watt among others in the field).

What about the Muslim children who want to grow up and have families, not go kill Jews? See? Did Muhammad say that or some extreme sect of the Muslim religions. Extremists, we all got them.

I don't think anyone is forced to be an extremist, but the rewards for the family might be a little enticing.

I can't remember who said it in this thread, but it was a good point:

About the teachings of holy texts and death to the infidel...

Just because it is there, does not mean it is taken seriously by anyone with a mind.

And yes, this means that bombings, abductions, etc, are all the works of misguided and altogether dim-witted people.

I suppose it's merely justifying what is and isn't in defence if islam.

I already gave you those in an earlier reply, you really need to pay more attention. I've read the koran, I lknow what it says...you merely assume it's open to debate and vague...there's nothing vague about it.

Dude, if you look carefully enough you could find stuff in the bible that's WORSE!

Deuteronomy 7:1-2: "... the seven nations greater and mightier than thou; And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them."

Joshua 6:21: "And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.

Joshua 10:40-41: "So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded. And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon."
Numbers 31:1-18: "...And they warred against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded moses, and they slew all the [adult] males. And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones...And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses...And Moses was angry with the officers of the host And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Ba'laam, to commit trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord. Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the female children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."

It's not just one group of people, one religion, one society that does damage, it's some of the whole... remember that...

Those quotes mention acts of violence which may or may not have happened to illustrate biblical content...the koran quotes are actually encouraging new and ongoing violence.

So, how can you explain the fact that some of my muslim friends have christian friends? Eh? The reality if all holy books say some nutty things. I found this slightly entertaining one from the bible.

If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, 12 you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity. - Deuteronomy 25

I think this shows as being quite nutty. But the point is that you have to phase out some of the weirder stuff, because these books were written thousands of years ago. 4 Quotes from a book that has millions of sentances in it does not show the book is violent, only that those 4 sentances are.

The Bible is mis-represented by the KKK, etc. and Bin Laden mis-reads the Koran. No difference, really.
