Apparantly there's a competition up for anyone to write a 50K (or more) word novel in just one month. I'm thinking about possibly entering but it's nothing more than "maybe so, maybe not".

Thoughts about it? Just to give an idea about what 50K words are like, Feed My Eyes (in my userpage) went just under 4,000 words and was about just less than 4 pages long in Text New Roman as a size 10. So, using the same font, it'd probably be about 50 pages at least.

Unless you have something to start writing about straight away, I wouldn't recommend it. I entered something like this except it was just a plain writing competition, and I couldn't think of anything to write about immeditaley, so I just sat at my PC with microsoft word up and tried to think of ideas. Eventually, I realised I'd taken too long to think of something and that I wouldn't be able to finish it in time.

I've been trying to write a novel myself. I have an awesome, multi-layered storyline going and I'm fairly skilled in the descriptive and 'professional' department but I just don't have the motivation to finish it. The lack of believable dialogue, character development concerning their pasts and the sheer scope is really getting to me. So, mad props if you follow through with the whole thing.

Sounds like an opportunity, Lost. Have any idea what you might write about should you decide to enter? 50,000 words might seem intimidating to some, but if you have a good flow going in your writing it's a breeze.

I've got something in mind actually for a story believe it or not anyway. It's an old project I started and never finished. I'd really just re-write it all over again (I only did the first...4 pages I think with very little of a plot done) and actually complete it this time with 50,000+ words this time.

Heh, I don't think they'll catch me if I just submit something I wrote years ago...oh wouldn't it be worth it? To submit something old and then be utterly surprised when absolutely nothing happens to it?

To be serious, I wish you luck, Lost-Chances, if you attempt it with an extended version of "Feed My Eyes" or whatever you're thinking about doing. I don't think I need to tell you this, but I personally feel you're better off spending your time writing a novel for the sake of writing it, not for the sake of competing in a contest, definitely not for a month-long one. Although I think you are a good writer, I can see you working your arse off just so nothing happens.

But...if you do go about this, I urge you to create an elaborate, physical story outline before you start. Otherwise, I can almost assure you it will hurt later.

Even if your story doesn't come together, you'll still have an interesting experience. I say go for it. Try strange things just because.

50,000 words is definitely a shit load of words and I went to that link and couldn't find anything about that competition even though it was probably staring me in the face, directions please.

Also, is there a prize of any sort for completing that novel? It looks like it's for charity by the looks of the site.

I need Monet, to buy DeGas to make my Van Gogh. I tried to Hale a cab but my Whistler didn't Turner 'round.

Well, in that case, I wish you good luck! Als, please could you send me a copy or something when you're done, I'd like to see how this turns out.

All of them negative.

Haha, I'll probably try to upload it to somewhere where it's easier to find for everyone. Either Fourth Perspective, deviantART or Newgrounds; or all three.

Indeed, just try so you can say you can do it.

Oh yes, that's actually the entire point of the thing. There are no prizes (besides a certificate and recognition you have managed it) and the only judging is their own coding to find out if you've met the 50,000 words. That's it. It could be dreadful and you could just be digging up an old story but it would defy the point of the exercise.

Oh, and it wouldn't be an extension of Feed My Eyes, it's an older thing.

I've got a basic plot in my head. I may start trying to materialise it at some point.

It's the entire website.

Nope actually. "The real prize in NaNoWriMo is the manuscript itself, and the exhilarating feeling of setting an ambitious creative goal and nailing it."

50,000 words isn't too much. If you have a good idea it can literally pour out of you and you will reach 50,000 words with no problem.

Well, that's much better than what I originally thought the contest had intended. So in that case, I wish you luck again and hope to hear how you enjoyed it.

175 pages in one month? I guess if you've got the sort of time where you can write 6 pages a day, you could pull it off. I mean, I've written 6 pages worth of stuff in a single day, usually when putting together a last-minute essay for a class; but to do that every single day for a month straight for nothing more than recognition of having made the effort?

Pass. It'd be one thing if they weren't judging "quantity over quality" and offering some sort of incentive, be it cash, publication, or otherwise; but as is it just doesn't feel worth my time.

Well, I worked out it should be about 50 pages actually. Nearly 4,000 nearly took up nearly 4 pages. I think as long as I have a basic gist of what I'm going to do in the story, I'll be perfectly fine and content.

It'd be cool if Newgrounds made a small competition out of it but I think the idea of a group of judges reading even just ten novels to judge just wouldn't work.
