That sounds like a bit of an exaggerated case really. That whole issue is something that can be overblown pretty quickly. The atmosphere around here is generally quite friendly: people will find others to chat with and discuss, you know, interesting things with each other. I find negativity really only tends to crop up in numbers when either someone is deliberately bringing it upon themselves (say, a gimmick alt or something) or that a particularly controversial issue is being discussed. Most of the rest of what could be a reason to be "uncomfortable" is just minor and can be ignored. There shjouldn't be a reason to be "scared" here. The mods are people too after all, and participate in discussion as much as the next guy.
I think that in some cases, the whole "relationship" between new users and mods/regulars could be made better with a little education and tolerance. It's something that's been discussed in the open discussion thread already. If you have any ideas on how it can be done, it would probably be best to just come out with it. Being basic, I don't think new users should have their hands held all the way, but they can be treated with a little less irrational contempt either way. Eh, we're human I suppose.
