My brother is suicidal after he switched from antipsychotic to antidepressant medicine and has been banging his head against the wall a lot. I don't think he's banging it hard enough to cause unconsciousness, but does it cause brain damage over time?

Any kind of repetitive head trauma will cause brain damage over time.

It's hard telling. Hell, any little damage to the head could end up with fatal consequences.

Hell, look at the Billy Mays situation. Though we don't know for sure, whatever hit him on the head during that flight may have caused his death. Then there's the case of that actress Natasha Richardson. She hit her head in a skiing accident that didn't look to be too bad. She was fine for a little while, but before you know it, she was in a coma for a head injury and died the next day.

So you might want to stop your brother from making himself become a vegetable. . . OR WORSE.

Well, every time he hits his head against the wall, his brain will be banging slightly against the inside of his skull. Now if this were to happen every so often, as it does with most people, it shouldn't cause brain damage because the human body is built to deal with such things, but if he's deliberately banging his head against the wall then the brain is taking more of a beating than usual, and although the chance of getting brain damage isn't increased significantly, it's still increased at least a bit, and you should stop him from banging his head sooner rather than later.

As a kid I used to hit myself in the head, ALOT. I mean a lot, I'd use textbooks, the wall, my fists, and the floor. Sometimes with a videogame controller. Don't ask why, I was like 6 and I was going through a lot of crap that kids shouldn't be going through. Anyways I grew out of it perfectly fine without any damage, though I do get slight headaches every once in a while.

If your brother's head is as hard than mine then he should be fine too.

Great, thanks for the insight. I wish I could stop him, but he's in the mental hospital right now and it's in their hands.

Wow, what a bunch of weaklings. They're obviously not fit to live. I've bumped the back of my head multiple times (including multiple falls) (one time a 20 pound slab of wood from a chair I broke came hurling down onto the back of my head, necessitating staples). And I'm just fucking fine. JUST FUCKING FINE.

Well at least if he keeps banging his head, he'll have some padding in between his head and the wall now. :S

Makes me wonder how those people who have a nail stuck in their head for twenty years without knowing it live for even 10% of that time period.

One time I fell out of a hammock and hit my head pretty hard. And another time I was playing a game with my cousin were we try to knock each other off of a playhouse by ramming into it and I accidently head-butted it and got a big lump on my noggin. I was also hit by a car when I was 12 and required around 12(ha) staples for my head. Thinking back, I've had a lot of head trama. So yeah, I guess some people can just take more of a beating.

Either that or my years of head injuries has made me immune...
