there has been so much discussion about being 13 on newgrounds.
I want to get the record straight. do you have to be 13 or not?

You have to be thirteen to have a profile/account on the site, however Newgrounds is free for everybody to use, regardless of age, as long as you keep to viewing age-suitable content.

No you don't have to. It's there as a warning due to the extreme content NG has. NG assumes that if you're under 13, you will not notice the flash/art rating and accidentally watch adult-rated movies or something like that.

Besides, it is NOT mandatory to enter your birthday date so how would NG know you're 12. Even if it is mandatory, the 12 year olds and under would use a false birthday date to bypass the filter.

There is a huge stereotype that 13 year olds cause trouble in the BBS and more bullshit like that. Ignore it. If you're smart to read the ratings and know your limits on what and what is not permitted, it really doesn't matter how old you are in NG.

Hey, there are even 13 year olds more mature than some 17 year old people in here. People that make these shit stereotypes are either hypocrites or are shit-eating bastards. Age doesn't fucking matter: maturity does.

It doesn´t really matter. This "You have to be at least 13 years old to sign up"-rule is most likely just there to prevent bitching from parents. There were several people in the past who openly admitted they were only 11 or 12 and I´ve never seen any one of them get their account deleted.

But the problem most people have here with 13 year olds is that they usually act a little immature compared to other users (a lot of NG regulars are almost twice their age). That´s why some people like to point out that rule to tell annoying, immature people to go away.

But as long as you act mature and aren´t an annoyance to anyone, nobody is gonna be bothered with the fact that you´re 13 (or 12).

13 is the prefered age,
the only problem is that it is REALLY annoying when a 13 year old thinks they know more than someone who is older.
i used to be like that :P
i was a level 7 @ around 13 and i told lvl 2, 28 year olds that they were noobs :D
but yeah, i've matured since then and i'm better than ever!

It is illegal to collect ANY information from anyone under 13. Every site will say you have to be 13 or older to sign up, not just Newgrounds.

You do have a point there. However most young kids tend to be immature. While most older people tend to be more mature. There are exceptions, but mostly age coincides maturity.

So most people assume that 13 year olds and lower are immature, which is mostly the case.

Indeed. It's a product of a government thinking that if they make sites turn away under-13s, then they can somehow stop pedophiles from getting their addresses on AOL.

Go figure.
