I think I'd prefer a Flash Portal-style "Judgment" admission system on the Art Portal over the "scout" system used there currently; that would alleviate the constant begging of people to be scouted, the cascading waves of people being booted from the portal when anyone they or their sponsor or their sponsor's sponsor etc gets booted (many thanks to Captain-Ben for re-sponsoring me out of the blue!), and the dictation and confusion about what types and styles of art are allowed. Just set the score cut-offs (ie anything below score x after y time gets deleted) to whatever level will maintain the amount and general quality level of art that's desired, and it should pretty much work automatically from that point on, right?

(Note: I may be very naive about the amount of work actually required to manage the Judgement system!)

Since Tom said specifically "sketches", I took that as meaning "don't make your doodles public". I'd like to think that that goes for quick doodles created with Photoshop, too.

On the other hand, fantastic things can be created with pencils:

The scout system does have its advantages - for one thing, very importantly, it builds connections, which ratings do not do. Ratings have failed in the music portal, so I can see why they decided to try something new.

My suggestion for making the scout system work:

Make some sort of special category for people who were unscouted because they were down the chain - let them have a small grace period in which they are placed into a special category, apart from the people who were NEVER scouted, and established artists can choose whether to rescout them or not. If they do, then their whole chain of scouts stays intact.

...and if they don't, THEN they get unscouted and the artists one step further down the line get placed in the grace period. So that all the dominoes don't fall at once, but more slowly, and people can save the ones they like.

Seems like it would save a lot of wasted effort.

I wasn't aware that a rating scheme hadn't worked in the music portal, thanks for the info.

I'm all for building connections, but I'm not sure tying that into an admission system is a great idea. I would say that the "Friends/Watchers" and "Favorites" systems on deviantART, for instance, work very well as connection systems--not to mention their really robust notification system--but they aren't used as an admission system; relying on networking/connections as an admission system seems inherently at risk of favoritism, whoring, etc.

The easiest way to fix the scouting system is to make it so only certain people can scout.

Admin approved people.

At a later date these people can then vote to add a new scouter to their ranks who is granted the same abilities as them.

But its a GROUP vote made by appointed individuals

either way its too late to fix now

That will greatly limit the growth of the Art Portal and will mean that most good works will remain in the unscouted section. Growth will be exponential, and no small group of people will be able to keep up with all of it. It needs to be at least somewhat automated.

Here's another suggestion: have a sort of "judgment period" for each new scout that requires a certain # of votes from other scouted artists: "yes" or "no".

I'm surprised that people are surprised at the low number of female users. I thought it was quite high, I mean there are barely any female regulars here. The amount of females that have been to this site to play the odd game or wtch the odd movie in a link would be a completly different ratio, but in terms of regular users most people here could probably not name more than 10 regular female users.

Thanks for posting some snippets of data from the survey, Tom. I wish you hadn't snipped out the PC % on the game consoles answer, though. And included the Steam/WiiWare/XBL/PSN store results, too. Good stuff, though.

This stat is the most shocking of them all, I'd reckon.

So said you on page 1.... and then about 5 more people for the next few pages. Why, because you (like some of the others outright stated) suspect people lied about being 18-24, and are really underage?

Possible, but... personally, I'm not surprised. Most of my friends on NG are 18-24, with a few in my own bracket of 25-34 or whatever it was in the survey.

The total under-24 crowd added up to 94% or so, and I thought that was a little high. As recently as 3-4 years ago, there were quite a lot of late 20s, 30s, and even a few 40somethings around. That said, maybe the older you are on NG, the less likely you are to take a survey. :::shrugs:::

Oh well.. Hi from one of your 4.1% females.

Moar females should take the survey, clearly. As much as people love to repeat the sausage-fest meme about either NG or the internet in general, I suspect the actual % of female VIEWERS of NG is higher than 4.1%. Now, whether the ACCOUNT HOLDERS who are female number more than 4.1% is another matter. I tried to get my fiancee to take this survey, but she didn't want to, and since she doesn't have an NG account, though she occasionally watches videos in the portal, she wasn't really the target audience for the survey.

Actually, though, that's another thing Tom should have posted: how people answered the "do you have an account?" question. I bet it was 95% yes, 5% no. Or something similar. But even more skewed than the "are you under or over 24" or the "are you male or female" ones, I bet.

You have got to be kidding me. The DS is at 60%??? People just don't know how to save up money. And I also had no idea the Wii was so popular, and most of my friends have either a PS3 or 360. I guess all the 10 year olds on this site filled out the survey.

The DS is one of the biggest selling portables in modern gaming history. Why is it shocking that 60% of users responding to a survey on NG, a site primarily about flash movies and flash games in fairly even balance... would own such a popular (and low cost) item?

Also, I'm one of the people who checked off the Wii/DS and didn't check off the PS3 and 360 (too expensive + I already have a gaming PC, don't need redundant PC-ish consoles), and I'm about to turn 32. You need to reevaluate your ageism, it might be directed a bit off the mark.... It's hilarious that you're a 15 year old looking down at 10 year olds, also.

nice idea, however, this does mean that the selected scouters need to go through a huge pile of shitty submissions to find some good stuff,

which is tiresome as fuck

Not enough of us answered the damned survey, we were the remaining 6% or so and each range was such a tiny x.x% that Tom didn't bother quoting that info. ;_;

Same reason, apparently, that he didn't bother quoting the PC gamers line along with the MS/Sony/Nintendo info.... musta been pretty small, which saddens me way, way more than that few 25+s answered the survey.

It also makes one wonder if the only PC gamers in this day and age are all 25+, too, and when we die off, so will PC gaming.... (sigh)
