I've been working on a game and I was going to upload it to spamtheweb to get a bit of advise from the flash forum. I've just noticed the size of the .swf is 15MB! The size of the .fla file is only 9MB and all there is in the game is the engine and some basic pixel graphics. Any idea why this is? I've always thought the .fla was bigger than the .swf. Cheers for any help.

Check the sound files your using, usually that will add a lot of filesize if you don't optimize your audio beforehand.

Cheers but there isn't any sounds at all. There isn't any image files or anything either. I'm using CS3 if that makes a difference.

Go to File > Publish Settings > Flash (tab), and check "Generate size report". That will create a text file in the same folder as your .swf when you export the movie, and it contains very detailed information about the size of every object in your flash. With the help of that you should be able to find the cause.
It does sound really weird though that the .swf is bigger than the .fla, unless you embed some external resources it shouldn't be possible really.

Thanks a lot, that really helped. I never knew you could do that. I think it's so high because I embedded a few fonts. Any idea how I undo that? That would be great.

OK I figured it out. You click 'don't embed', who'd have thought? Cheers anyway.

DO NOT EMBED TONS OF FONTS. BIG NO-NO.
If you HAVE to use ninety different fonts then offer a download and tell them how to install it or something. Otherwise, try to use default fonts.

Yeah, I've learnt my lesson. The little demo I made went from 15MB to 116KB when I removed the embedded fonts. That's a little bit better.

A little bit? The fonts you had in there were like, 100 times the file's actual size!

There's an issue though - without embedding the fonts, other folk will not necessarily see the same stuff as you, so your considerations regarding layout and typography can be rendered useless.
Remember that you can embed sections of fonts - e.g. for a score, ember the numerals.
