I don't see any topics on this, so I thought I'd post about it. Mochi are currently in the testing phase of a new "idea" called "mochi coins". Users buy coins for real money, spend them in your game and you get paid a percentage of what they spend in your game. In testing it's apparently increased the average $ per thousand plays to $6.50.

I have my doubts. Why would anyone pay money for upgrades to a flash game?

I'm skeptical of how well it's actually going to work, but a CPM of $6.50 is pretty impressive. I guess it could work if you wanted to throw in a few superficial extras like hats for your character or whatever - it doesn't seem right to actually restrict gameplay for people who aren't willing to pay.

It's not something everyone will do for every game. If your game is good enough and it has some great upgrades/features, out of the hundreds of thousands of players there will be some stupid enough to spend money on upgrades. That's how it works when working with large quantities of people.

It wouldn't be that direct. It'd be somewhere along the lines of: Buy every weapon in the game - 100 points.
Catch: you need to spend 20$ on secret weapons

People will do it.
Some people.
This idea really only works with multiplayer, like NX cash.

Its an interesting idea, I dont know if everyone can really benefit from it. But the concept of pinching very reasonable money amounts to pick on impulse gamer/buyers is a good one. Im sure I probably spent like thousands of dollars on itunes just cause i dont feel like hunting around for songs for free, and its just a dollar.. so it becomes worthwhile. Same with iphone apps etc.

This reminds me of the early days of mochi and ng api's where you were getting rediculous rates for it because not many people were in on it yet. It'll come back down to reality eventually so its all in the timing and the 6.50 will soon become more realistic as it plateau's out.

I doubt I'd ever buy an upgrade on anything, simply cause im not a hardcore gamer enough BUT if it was like a negligible amount like under a dollar, id be tempted.

I think it would work really well if the cost perr upgrade was somewhat low and it was focused on secret items, so it would milk money from stat whores. haha.

And holly shit 14$ mil on two capital runs??
Damn that's hard to do in an economy like this.

It doesn't have to be a dollar :P If half a million people are willing to pay a penny each to have a game or animation with the main character in just his or her underwear, you're set.

I guess the internet needs an easy, standardised way of handling exchange of pifflingly small amounts of money.

Actually, most people don't care if it's a penny or a dollar, it's just that they don't want to bother buying it with their credit card (Which is a hassle, I tell you), or don't have a paypal account, and just don't want to pay, period.

I would have absolutely no problem with paying $1 for a game upgrade if it was clicking a button and I enjoyed the game, entering card details is a pain in the arse. If this system solves that problem, which it would appear to have done, I would happily see and use paid upgrades.

It would have to be a really good game to pull that sort of thing off, however it is a step closer to making free online Flash games a respectable gaming platform.

Personally I would never buy anything no matter how cheap for a flash game but it's great for developers because I'm sure there are loads of people who would.

A good friend would bail you out of jail, but your best friend would be the one sitting next to you saying, "damn that was awesome".

A perfect way to get buyers would be to have a multiplayer game with PvP combat, where players can buy items to gain an advantage over others. Some people can't resist trying to be the best, even if they have to pay for it. It's disgusting.

Begins making multiplayer PvP game
