I was thinking that it was about time I got FL Studio (really...) but I wasn't sure whether to get the express version or save up for the next, $139 version. Do the versions higher than the express version (especially the $139) really have that much more to offer. I don't want to save money if it will give me crap!

express doesn't have a piano roll, which is critical for most musical production.

are you planning to buy or do you own a midi keyboard?
No: buy the fruity ($99) version. it has piano roll which is the most important thing of fl.
Yes: buy the $139 version. it has audio recording so you can play your keyboard and it records what you play. it has to be a MIDI keyboard. ordinary keyboards don't work.
once you have fl, download some free vst's.

I've used SuperwavePb (the vst plugin, right?) with Mu.Lab. I don't think its any good; I seemingly always end up with a simplistic sounding synth (I don't think it has a very full sound). I usually use the synths already preset into the program because I don't think I'm using SuperwavePb to its full potential.

What does that have to do with his question. XXL wasn't even mentioned in the question.

My favorite singer/actor is Miley Cyrus. What are you going to do about it?

From my responses, Express doesn't have a piano roll which is critical if you know about FL. So Fruity edition is alright if you don't want to record audio (but you can just get another VST or program and do that). If you do want the recording feature, then Producer edition is what you need.

Yeah, Express really doesn't cut it as anything more than a musical notepad.

I own a legitimate copy of FL8 XXL, and of you got the money it's definetely the way to go. The plugins it comes with are easily worth the price on their own, especially Sytrus once you get past how complicated it is.

If you use mostly free VST's however, the producer edition should be just fine, anything lower and you're losing vital features if you plan on using FL a your main DAW.

If you just want to use FL inside another host, however, you might be fine with the Fruity edition.
