So apparently scientists are building a laboratory 4,850 feet underground to research on Dark Matter. *Yes they are still are looking for it* Do you know how deep that is? Thats longer than putting 4 empire state buildings together! Man oh man, its gonna cost 550 million dollars to fund but hey, WHO DOESNT WANT A LAB 4,850 FEET UNDERGROUND.
More here.

I'd hate to be in a broken elevator in that lab.

Why not just go where most Newgorunders go, in their mom's basement with blankets covering up the windows so no sunlight comes through, while you blog on NG with you WoW dolls all around you?
it's dark enough there, NGers hate natural light.
NG stopped chris Brown...

wowo thats really epic!
I hope I get to work in an underground lab one day (researching extremely infectious diseases). Underground of course because if it causes a zombie outbreak it'll be contained easily.

You KNOW that that would make a funny comedy/action starring Will Smith.

If I was an evil warlord/genius, the first thing I would most likely do would be to contemplate the idea of building a lab 4,000+ feet underground.

NO, no, no. Some jackass will run out and expose the disease in an effort to survive (although ultimately he is fucked either way) thereby exposing the disease to all of mankind. Trust me. This kind of thing happens.
Some people have big hearts. I have a big penis. Best movie ending ever.

Well if you were near the top at least you get experience weightlessness for a good minute or so before your instantaneous death! That'd be cooler than being trapped in the lab when the air exchange system shorts out.

WITH 3D PURPLE DRINK ACTION.
Ah, man, I've always wanted to buy an abandoned underground complex. It'd be so cash. :3

Wait, I just had a thought. Do scientists think it'll be easier to find dark matter down there just because it's going to be really, REALLY dark?
I don't think they thought this one out all the way. :P

If I had to guess, I'd think it might have to do with not exposing the surface to any dark matter. Or maybe they can use the... what, the greater pressure down there somehow? Iunno. Maybe we should read the article.

Yep.
The site is ideal for experiments because its location is largely shielded from cosmic rays that could interfere with efforts to prove the existence of dark matter, which is thought to make up nearly a quarter of the mass of the universe.

Lets think here, not hating but wouldnt the elavator have break points or airloks or something? I mean you are not going to go 4500 feet straight down. Ther would be pressure systems that would need to be in place. So that would mean elevator check points right?

I dunno, they have a single elevator for the CN Tower, all you do for pressure is swallow - then your ears pop and you're good for 20 more seconds. Albeit that's a quarter the distance and above the ground. They probably would have substations along the way - not only for pressure but for maintenance... there's going to be more than just a personnel elevator, as well as all the air exchange ducts and motors... In fact I'd bet only a fraction of the complex would actually be at the maximum depth.

If that's the case then the titles misleading... heh, oh well. Yeah the swallow thing would work.. mabey a gum dispenser in the elevator. That would be sweet. With every thing you mentioned in that elevator, it alone would be about half a million dollars. And I mean the equipment costs would surpass 40 million. The archatectual design and building is another 20 million and funding the research and paying the doctors is another 200 million! and that most likely per doctor! 55 does not seem to cut it. Thats a low estamate. or a cheap facility
