So if you go and work and stuff and end up 10 lbs lighter in a few weeks, where does it go? Is it added on to another fat person or is it like, evenly distributed amongst people? Hmm...
That's what she said.
It's converted into energy that your cells use to function, or to create new cells (muscle growth).
=\

It turns to dust and goes out your ass.
Literally.
Yeah but i don't think my body is going to make 10 lbs of cells, or I wouldn't have lost any weight!
Aha!
That's what she said.

Actually, that better explains it.
Fat isn't energy. Calories are. It's converted into heat, that's why it's called BURNING calories.

You apparently missed the first half of my sentence.

Fat gets converted to glucose. Glucose converts ADP to ATP which is used as energy in your body's cells. When that energy is expended it turns into ADP, CO2, and Water. The ADP is reused, the CO2 is expelled through your lungs, and the water is pissed out. None of it gets destroyed, but it does leave your body.
But when the cells use it where does it go then?
That's what she said.

Heat being a primary byproduct of cellular activity and whatnot. Notice how you get warm when you work out? Yeah.

Everybody knows that you don't lose weight when working out. You lose weight by eating properly. When you work out fat cells are converted to muscle cells, and some heat is burned in the process.

This topic is a cesspool of ignorance. I sometimes don't know why you bother trying.

Kid might actually learn something! Not to mention the untold numbers of lurkers who were like: "well duh it... well actually... uh... man I really don't know... *back button*"

Haha. I was on the train of thought 'If he doesn't know this answer yet then there is no hope."
Half full vs. half empty I suppose.

His original theory was rather... disappointing.
;)

Yeah, I fucked up a detail or two, but it was more accurate than what anyone else wrote.
I think its more along the lines of Fat being a stored form of sugars. When your glucose levels run low (IE when you work out) your body releases glucagon which turns glycogen stores into glucose. The glucose here comes together with O2 to create 35 ATP molecules through cellular respiration. The glucose combined with the oxygen creates water and CO2 and a by product and through a bunch of steps creates the ATP and NADPH that your cells use as energy.
The reason why you get fat is because when you have an excess of glucose (IE you just ate a big meal) your body releases insulin which increases your body cell's permeability to glucose so that the glucose can enter the cells. Once inside a process occurs which turns that glucose into fat.
Intelligent, serious posts on the BBS?
I'm scared.

Simplification: Fat gets decomposed into smaller molecules. The breaking apart of the big molecules produces energy. Then these smaller molecules get evacuated out of your system.
My signature was old so I changed it.

took the words out of my mouth, the law of conservation of mass states :matter cannot be created nor destroyed but converted into energy.

when you lose weight your also losing water weight, sweat, which, is water vapor, thats where thats going
Don't lie to the kid! Everyone knows that for every fat cell you lose, another person gains that same fat cell. And also that the north americans stole all the fat cells from african people during WWI!

To put this into simple terms. Your muscles need energy to work, they use fat when not using calories, because fat is basically stored energy. And the fat gets converted into energy which then heat, then dissipates into the air.
Chemical energy (fat)-mechanical energy-(muscles)-heat energy (by product)
/thread
The fat atoms break into other, littler atoms. DUH GUYS.

Eighth grade biology might be a step up from the usual spam and copy pasta, but its far from "intelligent."
Derp.

These comments have nothing to do with biology. its physics my friend

not kinetic energy, mechanical energy, this hole thread is full of fail...

Pft, every science breaks down into physics eventually (and that into math, if you're an XKCD fan). Biology or more specifically, Biological Chemistry is the central science in this thread. =P
