4.09 / 5.00 15,161 ViewsAs the title of this post says, I managed to spend some time with the game 'The Sims 3.' I had heard a lot about these games, with their immensely large playerbase and addictive qualities, but I had yet to actually lay my hands on a copy.
I created my character to look like my own immensely attractive visage, but was unable to capture the sheer magnitude of the raw manliness that I emanate from each and every pore in my body. The game did not have any haircut even similar to mine, however, which is disappointing, but I let it slide. I do not have an especially outrageous haircut, in fact you could describe it as particularly neutral, yet the only haircut I could find that could even closely allow someone to identify the character as me made my character look like a character on Saved By The Bell.
Nor could the clothes they supplied me with capture the cutting edge of fashion that I find myself upon day after day. But again, I let this slide. I chose an inoffensive striped hoodie, jeans and some chucks and let loose my character upon the world.
I decorated my house in a way only one such as me could, that is it looked magnificent by any stretch of the imagination. At this point I was feeling pretty good about my abilities in this game.
Now, of course, was the time to start the game.
I spent a few hours just getting my sim used to the world. Eating a meal. Going to the bathroom. Looking for a job. Painting a picture. And then he went to bed.
The following day my sim went to work at the medical profession, and I as the less-than-omnipotent God that the game cast me as was forced to wait around watching an empty house.
When my sim returned home, I discovered a shocking development. He was feeling stressed out from work. On his first day. The game recommended I allow him to watch some television to wind down, so I did just that.
Then I realised something.
I was sitting at my computer, watching a video game of me watch television.
What the hell?
Why was I doing this?
What is this game that forces you to live out the banal inner workings of a tiny 3D avatar of your own persona from behind a screen?
If I wanted to watch people live out their dull and boring lives, I would sit at my window with a telescope and play out the movie Rear Window in my imagination.
Or better yet. I'd live out my own dull and boring life. Instead of watching myself watch television in a game, I could watch television myself.
In short, I don't get it.

I am guessing you didn't read the first paragraph of my post.

I know exactly what you mean. I've never been a huge fan of The Sims series, but I picked up The Sims 3 last week and ended up playing it for the good part of 5 days. It seemed cool at first. I enjoyed the idea of building and designing the homes, which can take a while on this game. When it actually came to playing the game though, things soon got dull. It was nice at first being able to walk about a whole neighbourhood and do as you please.
It then struck me. What's so special about that? In GTA IV you have an entire city to mess around in, and in San Andreas you had an entire "State". The idea of wasting my personal time to build an avatars virtual life soon bored me and now I don't touch the game at all.
When the expansion packs are released, no doubt I'll be a sucker and buy them in the hope that they make the game more interesting for me. It won't be long after that I again realise there is no point in playing this game when I could be playing something more interesting, or doing something that doesn't even involve video games.
Don't get me wrong, after playing the Sims 3 I think it is a great game. But I feel your point is entirely valid. What is the point in making and avatar of yourself become successful, when you could be out there trying to achieve the same goals in your real life.

This is why i have one man and then another sims usually my wife who i use as my toy while the husband is at work aslo the great thing about number 3 is that you can just go and leave the house go to the library. It's not meant to be a game full of action its great to have on whilst watching a film
lol
its really simple!
whats not to get!
you can make your sim go on the pc and play games while you play the game that is making your sim play a game
see whats not to get?
.
This is why all I ever did with the sims games is use the cheats to get money fast, then secondly build the biggest baddest house I could, then burn the fucking thing down by leaving the fireplace on.
I assure you I am not psychotic I just thought this game was so damn boring I may as well indulge the god mentality and destroy my creations.
(oh yeah and I always left my characters in areas where they wouldn't escape the flames MUHAHAHA)

Why did you have to remind me that this was possible. I used to do it all the time on the PS2 version of the Sims. Now you know what's going to happen? I'm going to go back on the Sims and waste more of my valuable time on it.

The amount of people that have complained because the speed isn't fast enough in ultra mode is unbelievable.
I don't think it's too bad myself, but they could have made it a bit faster.
