He worked on a high floor, went down for a donut and the fact that they were only sold on the bottom floor meant that he had to go all the way down. Since he was on the bottom floor he could easily run away when the plane hit. If he was high up he would have been screwed.

It was stopped by the bulletproof vest underneath the soldier's iPod. The guys at Mythbusters shot an iPod and it didn't do shit to prevent the bullet's entry into a block of ballistics gelatin.

Related to topic, that girl is very fortunate to have survived. I didn't know that an iPod could divert so much electricity without killing the owner.
