Over here we have $1 shops, but it's $1 CAD, so it's worth $0.88 USD, and since the inflation makes it that you can constantly buy less with the same amount of money, they'll have to start selling things at a higher price. In fact, they already began, and most new $1 shops sell most of their items at a higher price than $1.

What's the point? You're most likely going to pay with a pound anyway and get 1p back which most people throw away.

Ahoy there sailor can you do the otter dance?

Yeah... I used to work in one of those places. Even though the shop is doing the customer a favour by selling them stuff so cheap, they still want everything cheaper and cheaper.

Also, the part about the shops selling 'the same products' is not true, because I know for a fact that 99p Stores has its own line of products which only they can sell. Unless an independent trader were to buy shitloads of products from them and sell them on a market stall with increased prices (this actually happens), but a real 'shop' wouldn't do that just to make a penny on each item. Not worth it.

But as I was saying, the fact that people went there just to save a penny is very characteristic of the people who do a lot of shopping in those places. You get people bringing brand-named products (which cost over three times as much in the supermarkets) to the counter, and claiming it was in the 50p clearance section. Pathetic.

£1 shops are for champions. I spit in the face of idiots who spend £370 on a golf club and £1000 on a new sofa for their living room -- wherin lies a £700 plasma screen and an expensive carpet.

I agree, I hate pennies.

I don't want them hanging around my sexy pound coins in my pocket.

I do it, I know I'm being suckered into a ridiculous deal but I do it anyway. I don't like coke as much as Dr Pepper, but I see these offers that are like "buy one box of coke get one half price!" so I buy it, even though I have something I didn't want I have more so I'm happy.

Silly consumers.

I think we all get suckered into these things sometimes i think it's just human nature. It is stupid and we aren't really saving anything but in our minds we think it's great. The people in marketing dream these things up for that exact purpose and it works. Impulse buying really does suck.

We're so stupid sometimes.

which is why i don't buy beer at my local supermarket, because they only ever do offers on packs of 8, not the four that i want.

that, and they're still fucking extortionate after the price cut. they had buy one get one free on a 4-pack of carling *bottles*, and it was still a fiver! jesus!

Surely there is some value there as it would last twice as long? Or does the price not add up to any sufficient saving?

It would have probably done the same if it was a one pound shop. The price is basically the same and if there are two stores that do the exact same thing each will have 50% of the market. If there is one store that store will have 100% of the market. Even if the price was exactly the same they would have lost half their business.

By making the price 99p, the store gives the impression that they've thought about the prices more thoroughly. In Australia, our smallest coinage is a 5 cent piece. We still get items worth 99 cents and 98 cents and 97 cents, it's just a way for the retail outlets to show the consumer that they've done their research and they know what they're selling.
Also, in Australia, we have 2 buck shops. Go figure. I used to get floppy discs with 8-bit videogames on them. It was the shit.
