You didn't come across as a creep at all, you should have just made it clear who you were from the get-go.
This convention was the first I've ever been to and I was kind of intimidated by it, but the point about the NG booth is that it's supposed to be as laid back as it can be, so it's a case of turning up for as little, or as long, as you like, and just introducing yourself from the start - something I failed to do. :)
