So I was wondering why HBO wasn't subject to the FCC's regulations and recently found out that the FCC can't regulate cable.

I mean like any cable (payed subscription) network period, Cartoon Network, TNT whatever as far as the FCC is concerned they can all be airing shows like "Real Sex" at 4 pm.

Apparently the crazy censorship comes from the cable networks themselves and is a combination of the some stupid "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" psychology and advertisers who don't want to be critized for being shown on dogdy material.

TL;DR US cable networks suck cocks.

You haven't noticed that half of the new shows on TV let the word shit fly and that on late night certain channels let it all hang out.

Well yeah but that's not exactly loosing up.

In places like Canada you can see tits and swearing after 7 pm so this isn't some marvel of first amendment rights.

Why not? They have the right to do something that some may condsider vulgar, but they choose with their own free will not to do it. They are excercising their first amendment rights in a responsible manner. It's all a big bucket of sunshine in my opinion.

Do you mean the networks or the shows because while it might be the network's choice it still kills the point of freedom of speech and undermines the original content the shows created.

Obviously there's reasonable boundaries but as it stands now the shows seem to be too censored.

exactly, if they don't want to, they don't have to, Im glad they are using self-control, otherwise watching TV with the family would get really awkward.

We could get into a big discussion about it but in the end it wouldn't matter. We have no input into what a network is and is not willing to air, because it's not our place to tell them what to do. In the end it's their television channel and they have to make important decisions about content and subsequently deal with the consequences of those decisions.

The only time I ever cared about the FCC was when they tried to get Howard Stern off the radio, and well look at him now, just as successful as ever.

Also if I wanna watch porn, I'll watch it on my computer, not my TV thanks.

All cable networks are too, you can choose to not buy the package or get it disconnected. Just because a channel is meant to be "family friendly" doesn't mean anything.

Cable sucks. A majority of pretty much everything on TV sucks. Why even bother watching it? The only reason I have a cable subscription is for On Demand, so I can see free movies whenever.

Well free healthcare would be nice but I don't see how that has anything to do with the FCC and the cable companies.

But so do we. And plenty of it.

If I'm going to bitch about what I wish I saw more of on television in America tits and shits is down near the bottom. TV sucks, everytime I try to watch the news they start talking about David Carradine jerking off to death and last nights American Idol results until I have a stroke.

It all boils down to money. These companies know that if they chose to air something that some people might not like, they would lose money from people boycotting them. So they slash away at things until they think it pleases everybody, but as we all know, you can't please everybody.
Unfortunately the media isn't about artistic value, expression, or anything like that. It's all about the bling bling.
