Sues a woman for downloading illegal music... Even though she doesn't own a computer.

Charges a 31 year old woman with 1.9 million dollars worth of fees... for 24 songs.

Sure, it's illegal, but 1.9 million dollars? The average American makes 2 million dollars in their life time. That might as well be life in prison.

We live in such a fair and just society, don't we? Peasant mob time? PEASANT MOB TIME?! PEASANT MOOOOOOB!

The RIAA has always been batshit insane. Well, actually, not until people stopped trading cassettes and started pirating CDs...

That's what happens when companies get corrupt and money hungry.

Opportunitism at its worse. The music industry needs to wake up and smell the coffee before it's too late. In today's world, people aren't prepared to pay a crap load of money for albums and singles any more.

Lowering the price of music in general would increase sales but music companies are just faceless, money-grabbing cretins. Obviously, there are always exceptions.

Found this on a news site.

"Cara Duckworth, a spokeswoman for the RIAA, said the industry remains willing to settle. She refused to name a figure, but acknowledged Thomas-Rasset had been given the chance to settle for $3,000 to $5,000 earlier in the case."

She was offered only a 3000$ out of court settlement, and declined.

I think she deserves this fee.

They claim the music industry loses 12.5billion a year

They sued her for 1.9million

To recoup the loses for the entire music industry they need to sue... 6 and a half people (call it seven)

I do not believe they own 1/7th of the music industry

They make profit from piracy

Without long winded math, its obvious the 99cents songs, times by the amount she downloaded [which is 24] does not add up to 1.9million, they infact benefited from her downloading them, they actually made a profit of $79142.67 from those 24 songs.

I allow anyone to steal these figures, since they are quite convincing and accurate

I'm sure she'll be able to stump up such a petty sum.

It's actions like this that has caused piracy on such a large scale. It could've been very different had they just once thought about the consumers' best interests.

Some people feel content to pour syrup on shit and call it pancakes their whole lives.

She should have showed up to court with $24, gave it to the judge, and then just walked the fuck out. C:

By the RIAA's logic, I owe them over $3 million dollars. :O

Give a dollar if you think Barack Obama will be a good president.
So far, 2 people think Barack Obama will be a good president.

It's what the RIAA does. It's a mafia shake down, in every way shape and form. Essentially, they say "GIVE US THIS CASH OR WE'LL FUCKING DESTROY YOUR LIFE" in a threatening letter. If you refuse to pay, they take you to the unjust American court system and have you fight against corrupt lawyers that should be hung in the streets. Then they pay off the jury (just like any good mafia court case), fixing the trial in their favor. If they fail to pay off a juror, MISTRIAL ON THE COUNT OF INCORRECT INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN TO THE JURORS.

Fuck this country.

I recommend you to keep further discussion about this in there instead.

Only this thread is about another case along with that case =P Should probably read more thoroughly before you jump to conclusions, as this thread was perfectly legitimate, and you killed my thread for no reason.

THANKS FOR THAT ^.^

Does anyone know how they work out the figure of damages/song? Surely it is only fair to charge for lost sales, i.e, the value of one song (£0.99) multiplied by the proven number of downloads? That would bring the total charge to £24, and I think most people couldn't give a shit about that to keep their asses out of jail.

...and with that post, people of Britain were so surprised that "tea was spilled, crumpets were dropped and monocles everywhere popped out in shock."

Nonetheless, very much the same topic and discussion, and the other thread was made just hours before yours.

It was merely a thread about one subject, that being charges against a woman for 1.9 million dollars. This one is about the RIAA going batshit insane over multiple things, which just so happen to include the 1.9 million dollars that was charged to that same woman. I searched before I went into this thread, three pages back, found nothing, then searched million, and found that thread. I made the decision to make this thread because I felt the discussion points were varied enough to from that other thread to make this thread, and the other thread was already dead from discussion, so if I put a separate, unique story in there, it would have no traffic what so ever, meaning no discussion about it.

I don't make threads unless I think things out and search for other similar topics. I'm not new to this forum. =P

Cara Duckworth, a spokeswoman for the Recording Industry Association of America, said the association was "pleased that the jury agreed with the evidence and found the defendant liable."

Anyone with a name like that in a position of power will probably go power hungry and evidently insane.
