I'm collaborating with a friend of mine on a new song where he wants me to remix an old song he made for a school music class assignment.
I want to put my own DnB/IDM style drums to the song, only problem is there're already drums in the song. I'd simply ask him to remove them in the Reason project file (or whatever program he was using), however he tells me he has deleted the project file a while ago.
My question is: "Is it possible to remove the drums only from an mp3 file in a program such as Audacity?"
I know it is fairly simple to remove lyrics, and that's basically what I'm going for - except this time it's with the drums.
Does anyone know how?
Alternatively, does anyone know where a tutorial for this is?
Thanks in advance. :)

Now I'm no expert on the subject, but from my understanding, there is no way to simply remove (At least completely) drums from a single sound file... You'd need the project file to simply up and get rid of the track.
But once it's rendered into a single file, there is no real way to just get rid of a certain instrument, you could probably do some tweaking to make it less noticeable... But completely removing it? No.

In the process of removing lyrics, they're not completely removed either, they're just muted fairly well.
I understand there's no way of completely removing it, but I'm hoping there is a way of turning them down to a level which I can easily go over them.

I donno man... there's too many different freq's with drums to do it properly. I mean, you might be able to tone them down significantly, but the rest of the audio with take a big hit as well... making it basically useless.

Would the same be said for turning down everything but the lyrics?
Because I could just use the lyrics and remake the tune if I had to.

Drums usually take up the whole spectrum and aren't sustained sounds, they are short and percussive sounds, meaning you can't simply just turn down the level in one area, you would have to automate it to reduce when the drums hit.
If there's a drum solo, you could try antiphasing that, or you could hi-pass filter the track to remove the bottom end which would mostly be the kick, snare and bass. But all in all, if you do find a way, the results will most likely be shoddy at best.

It's physically possible to subtract one sound from another, however the situation you would need to be in to be able to do this relies on you already having the separate sound samples as they appear in the track

It's not possible to remove the drums from a track without destroying all the other parts.
