4.09 / 5.00 12,195 ViewsHi! I recently bought a tablet to get started with animation. Its harder and more time consuming than I thought it would be, so before I get a kick at it, I desided to do some digital paintings.
A few of these pieces weren't originaly my ideas, just my personal versions of other works. So if I break any rules by posting them here, let me know.

It's Magical...
sorry for the pun, but welcome to the Art Forum.
I think the key to animation is keeping it simple. Also, you have got to get your figures(characters) 'in your hands', be able to draw them with your eyes closed.
Your painting is very nice, but it doesn't really lend itself for animating. So if you want to get into that, I'd suggest doing more simplistic drawings, or just short animations. Animate a bird flying, animate a guy walking/running/,... stuff like that.

well I've already red and saw a number of tutorials about animation, even have a book about it. But when it comes to practice, I can honestly say I suck. Atleast Im taking this digital art thingy seriously and started to practice nearly every day.

It's all up to you off course, It's just that you said you decided to do some digital art to loosen your fingers/get used to your tablet. I think you should definately keep doing this digital art stuff, you seem to be quite good at it.
Woah hell of a starter pic you got there! Setting the bar high!
Can't wait to see more work from you in the future, and good luck with the animation. I've only done hand drawn animation so i don't know much about flash, but in my experience the simpler the character design, the easier it is to do complex motion. If you have complex characters it's easier to stick to simpler animation.
Think of how stick figure animations usually have lots of complex movement and action, which is easier to do since the character is so simple. While take some of johnnyutahs animation for example, some of them have really detailed characters, but most of the animation is just in the face. You have to find a happy medium :)

Poor? rofl. very nicely done... what's teh timeframe on this one?

It's looking great, welcome to the art forum. I was wondering if you would post a link to the piece you were inspired by.
Oh.. Nevermind, I just googled it. A little dissapointing that you "just" copied the picture. But you did a rather good job at it.

Yeah I didn't realize either, but it's not like hes taking credit for it, so, I'm still impressed.
You show some skill, but absolutely no creativity with that opening-pic. Could you post something you did not copy? That would be a whole new level of intresting

well Im cooking up something new right now, if Im lucky I will post it in a few days.
For now to show of same more, heres a traditional painting I did.
I call it simply "Millhouse"
Here's another one. It was done about a month ago then I dug it up and finished today.
Its another "copy" to test my eye and practice more with the tablet. Let me know what you think.

hope the flames aren't to exaggerated (although I wanted it to look a little different)
Most people cannot achieve what you have digitally even with years of experience
No mate, no.
The Millhouse is pretty good, and although you're kind of copying the illustrations of Magic Cards, you're doing an excellent job and it's good practice too.

Thanks! I've got the tablet for about 2 months now, so what you see here is just the beginning. I still got a lot to learn

Another thanks! And about the Magic Cards, yeah its a good practice but it were only those two illustrations. I've got more planed than just copying

~3h of work with references
Looks really good, Although for a study I would rather try to have some more drawings (of different poses) in three hours...
By references do you mean your own hands? Using your own body as reference is a great practice, and it really helps you get that pose exactly right (even posemaniacs is limited in its choices), but it can be a pain to keep your hand entirely still

Yes I am quite dissapointed that it took me 3 hours, and yes I took a foto of my hand and used it as a reference.

Wow you have really dry, cracked hands then :P

oh come on, you never heard about exaggeration? I only used the pose. The cracks and shading were made-up.
now for more art, this is a little something from my sketchbook. Expect more digital stuff from me this evening.
I think he was kidding, hence the :p...
I like the quarter face one, Nice idea, although it could have been executed a little better

Youre getting quicker then? Its quite okay, although I think the perspective on the mouth is off, you shouldnt be able to see so much of his denture... Also, his eyes are too high on his face (or his head isnt high enough), there is not enough forehead.

Appreciate the criticism. I usually spend more time on a painting, but this is only a sketch. Wanted to see what I can come up in an hour or such and know what others think about it.
And yeah, I will probably finish it up next week, so that it looks more polished :)
Long time, no post
Cooked up something fast before my topic got completely buried
~1,5h
Wanted to do it faster and more sketchy than detailed, but now I don't even know what the hell it is. Think I saw this guy in some movie or something, thats where I got the idea (it's NOT from Halo).
something more serious, the bigger image is uploaded to the art portal.
