Birthday threads are supposed to act like a present, as in, the +1 "Happy Birthday" posts actually mean something to that person.
It's when people have to make their own threads that it's annoying/pathetic.

Horrible idea.
There would be so many people just posting Happy Birthday to people who had their birthday like 5 months ago and then people would just start saying it's their birthday when it really isn't. I think birthday threads are fine even with all the +1 posts but how can that be avoided?

Some are. Which is why most of us are very careful in what we post.
However I've never seen a problem with birthday threads. You share the same birthday with 18 million people around the world. So at least the front page isn't completely flooded with Birthday threads.
