N. Korea to treat U.S. attempt to impose blockade as "act of war"

North Korea said it will "weaponise" its plutonium stocks amid threats to take military action over United Nations sanctions, state media said.

Pyongyang has for the first time confirmed it is seeking to enrich uranium in efforts to develop nucealr weapons, it said.

North Korea would view any US-led attempts to "blockade" it as an "act of war", the Associated Press (AP) said.

It follows a toughening of UN sanctions against the communist state.

The warning from North Korea's foreign ministry was carried by Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Saturday.

'Unacceptable behaviour'

On Friday, the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to impose tougher sanctions on communist North Korea, after its nuclear test on 25 May.

The North also tested a rocket thought to be capable of carrying a warhead, though Pyongyang said it was designed to carry a satellite.

The UN sanctions include the inspection of North Korean ships, a wider ban on arms sales and other financial measures.

The US deputy ambassador at the UN, Rosemary DiCarlo, said the new vote was a strong and united response to North Korea's "unacceptable behaviour".

The North Korean foreign ministry statement said: "Firstly, all plutonium to be extracted will be weaponised. One third of used fuel rods have so far been reprocessed.

"Secondly, we will start uranium enrichment," the statement added.

The BBC's John Sudworth in Seoul said the admission that Pyongyang was trying to enrich uranium was worrying, as the processing could take place in a smaller reactor and was easier to hide.

Korea analyst Aidan Foster Carter told the BBC Pyongyang's process was "out of control" and that nothing seemed able to persuade North Korea to stop its nuclear ambitions - neither sanctions nor financial incentives.

He said the nuclear stand-off may be part of internal ructions as Pyongyang's leader Kim Jong-il decides which of his three sons will take over from him.

Handful of weapons

North Korea is thought to possess enough reprocessed plutonium for between six and eight nuclear weapons.

However, analysts say Pyongyang has not yet mastered the technology to make a nuclear warhead small enough to place on a missile.

Pyongyang has stated its nuclear weapons programme is purely a defensive measure to protect it against a US attack.

Washington has said it does not intend to attack the North, and is concerned Pyongyang's nuclear knowledge could be passed to other states.

Well it is a major international incident...not OMG! A CELL MSG! or Older Women (although that one intrigued me...). So yeah...I can see where it is the Mod whose being r-tarded!

Also, it is an on-going international semi-crisis and we already have a topic that is currently on the front page. We also have a different, although possibly related topic here.

But that aside, do you have any commentary on this? A position? An argument? Something to spark debate? Or do you think OMG! LOOK I CAN COPY & PASTE! is a good enough starting point?

I wouldn't have known we're about to get our asses nuked if he hadn't posted.

And I don't see a golden Aura behind your weapon, so go away.

NATO, the organisation that the US, Canada, the UK, France and many others are a part of, possess the capabilities to launch an ICBM nearly anywhere in the world within something silly like 10 meters of its target.

North Korea, if they manage to develop a bomb, it would have to be manually carried by a plane or something, and even if they managed to build a missile to hold the warhead, its range would be something stupid, like hitting south Korea or Japan if there lucky.

I'm not certain of it, but I'm sure Japan and south Korea have some sort of missile defence system, further reducing the need to panic.

AND THEN, even if a nuke did explode in South Korea or something, I think you, safely sat in Canada would have absolutely nothing to afraid of, as soon after, a NATO coalition would invade North Korea or simply launch missiles at it in revenge.

So no, we're defiantly not about to 'get our asses nuked' by a small crappy Asian country.

Hmmm...what was it the post above mine said? Oh wait here it is:

It appears as if you found his copy-&-paste-w/NO-original-thought-post left you wanting as well. Hypocracy much?

Oh yeah, it's called the news. CNN, Fox and the rest of the major news outlets have reported on this as well as their threat to detonate a third nuclear device. Much of this is also talked about on another thread that's currently on the front page of politics.

The Taepodong 2 missile (errr...excuse me: 'satellite launch vehicle') is a three stage rocket believed to be able to hit part of Alaska or Hawaii. Although, there is a small possibility it could hit the West Coast. But the N. Koreans would have to miniaturize a warhead that could fit on the missile (as you point out). The fear here is so much goes on in the country we cannot see...we do not know what their capabilities are.

However, accuracy is the issue. US missiles (both surface and aircraft based) can hit very, very, very close to whatever target we want. If we want to take out a specific office in a building and miss...we're hitting the hall outside the office door. The N. Koreans on the other hand...not only would they be lucky to hit the building the target office is in...they would be lucky to hit the base the building was on.

It's called the US Army (patriot anti-air-artillery) and the US Navy (Ageis cruisers).

I agree here. This is typical Pyongyang blustering. Kim wants something, it may not even be by us but rather a domestic audience such as the military. This could be Kim's way of cementing one of his son's (probably his youngest)...or even his daughter's...position to succeed him.

Highly unlikey.

Be a good story though

'San Francisco, Anchoridge, Tokyo, Kyoto and Seoul have all been annihilated by the North Korean government. When questioned about these events Obama announced his plans to impose tougher sanctions on the increasingly dangerous Communist state.

Unlikely. Last time we imposed sanctions they said the same thing. The best chance of him actually hurting the US would to be do a short range nuke against our naval forces, and possibly Sourth Korea. But if he did that then NK would suffer from total nuclear annialation. And China isn't backing Korea.

No, it wasn't rasmism (sic). It was assuming that we don't have spies there already, nor assassins to pop the Kims' heads off at a moment's notice, which we probably do. Wouldn't be the first time we offed a foreign leader. (Iran, anyone?) And in case you didn't notice, our military is pretty stretched right now with Iraq and Afghanistan. We'd have to reinstate the draft in order to invade.

Ha. Ha. You're funny. What makes you think Obama wouldn't steamroll Pyongyang the second that happened (after intercepting the missiles, of course)? Besides, if his response was more sanctions, the Secret Service would be ousting him at gunpoint along with the rest of us.

And what about those of us in the Puget Sound? We're a lot closer than San Francisco AND have multiple naval installments. If anyone besides Alaska gets royally screwed, we're the next target. (And Palin's church thinks Alaska's a refuge from the apocalypse. Now THAT'S funny!)

I doubt we'd nuke North Korea to death. We'd just destroy the federal infrastructure, kill and capture all the government officials, and let South Korea move in. Who knows, we might even be out of there in five years if we do it right.

What type of race baiting assholes are you surrounded by when you have to actually defend your insults towards the president of the United States as not racist?

Also, I would think that we would rely on our air and sea power rather than any ground based forces in the event of a second Korean war would we not?

Technically it would still be the first Korean War.

You know? I agree with TheMason, I'm not seeing anything here that will spark debate, and the debate it has sparked the SAME debate as the other thread themason linked to.

Also that retarded mods comment was just nasty and uncalled for. We are a sensitive people dammit! :)

So yeah, let's keep it to the first thread since this is certainly fitting that topic of possible war with the North. Thank you.
