Woke up and read some status's on Twitter talking about the rush to grab certain names. My initial thought was that dannyisonfire would be taken since there already seems to be a couple of us on the web (I've seen a guy using the name on last.fm and myspace). Anyway checked ye olde Facebook and it was readily available so I snapped it up.

I tried making my username /home.php hoping that if anyone tried linking to my page, it would go back to their homepage instead. Facebook saw through my plot and now I'm stuck without a good name to use.

Same here. I like having a fairly common name. Someone in my school has the same exact name, first and last. Now they can't use it, and anyone else with my name can't.

My facebook "username" is my actual name, since I joined the site back when only college kids were allowed to sign up (and people actually put their real name).

Now that it is inundated with highschoolers and grade schoolers, I suppose it's only natural that there be profiles with "megamanXxX" and "bootilicious27" as their names.

What are the guidelines around creating a username?

Your username should be as close as possible to your true name (e.g. Jsmith or John.Smith). Names such as CoachJohn, BlondeJane, etc. don't clearly identify you as well as your true name.
