Dynamic tools for midi recording 2009-06-11 15:52:03 Reply

I was just curious if anyone knew of any other dynamic tools for midi recording. Right now i have a pan on my keyboard, and a sustainer pedal as well. Is there something that is like the pedal and such, that i can create vibrato, tremolo, etc?

And i dont mean something in the software, it has to be all hardware, like the pedal and pan. I was thinking like a midi flute almost, that could create these dynamics. Im not so sure though.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,

There exist midi wind controllers, similar in size to a clarinet, manufactured by companies such as akai. I believe they have wider dynamics options.

Are they easy to learn? I always wanted to learn a wood wind instrument.

The EWI is by far the best investment I've made in MIDI recording setups. It allows me to record real-time the breath controller data in my strings, brass, and woodwinds using VSL. It's one of the reasons why my strings are so expressive at times.

Im interested in it. Is it hard to learn? Compared to a piano or guitar, which is relatively easy and fun to learn.

Well I imagine you'll be able to skip out on the major hurdle of learning wind instruments, which is the embrouche, that's a bitch to get right.

Though honestly I've never even seen one in person, but I'd have to imagine it's a fair bit simpler than an actual woodwind instrument, and I bet the fingerings are configurable.

pix/videos please, I've been dying to see one of these things in action.

which virtual instruments allow you to use the expressiveness of the EWI?

Anything with assignable parameters

Well, it's not entirely always that simple. The VI must have the ability to crossfade velocities in real time. So when you put little air in and start with a single sustained note, the more air you put in, the higher velocity samples are played in real time WITHOUT having to hit another note like a keyboard.

The EWI should be easy to learn for you. The whole hurdle you need to learn for real woodwinds doesn't apply at all. Just the breath strength and fingerings.

If you want to see an EWI in action, youtube it. There are a ton of jazz pro's that use it. Start with Jeff Kashiwa here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUtdP3jQK UA&feature=related

NOTE: Keep in mind in some videos there are other rack gear involved, like a Boss loop pedal. The newer EWI also has USB compatibility as well, and is much cheaper.
