I love how you hit those high notes.

harmonics tend to play pretty heavily in my playing style

You need to have rests or chords that go for more than just one count. Speed isn't everything. And what about combining guitars? Maybe one or two rhythms with a lead...

This can be true, we can hammer out riffs that are slower, no doubt.

Also, I have played this on my electric piano so the guitar sounds are not good but here is an example of what I mean (I quickly played it so the timing isn't 100%). Instead of just fast riffs we should try some more technical work.

the random almost peppy stuff in the middle might do for an intro, it's always nice to have a slower, more acoustic intro to a song that gets balls heavy.

As for having leads over rhythms, i'm going to leave those to someone who is, you know, good at them. My lead playing is pretty limited, I'm generally more interested in rhythm. I should have some time to screw around tomorrow, I'll see if I can expand our theme some more.

I might have to jump in on this riffage. Everything is sounding alright, but albeit very similar and very Zakk Wylde like, except for lack of pinched harmonics. I'll use a different tuning (probably standard or Dropped D, D standard at the lowest and see what I can do. Shouldn't be anything too complicated, great thing about Guitar Pro is I can tab it too.

Try playing something centered on G, it won't sound out of place with the stuff focused on C.

I completely agree with you guys. Let's make it complicated. I like complicated music, it's awesome.
Since it's about vikings (with Solus' lyrics), why not put it to a key that resembles vikings? Complicated as shit, epic, and about vikings
I can't listen to the samples you have right now because it's late and I'm pretty much off to bed, but I'll listen to them tomorrow.

Response to The Metal Collab 2009-06-12 03:13:30

If this is gonna be about vikings, you all need to listen to einherjer. right now.

bone up guys.

Hey loan, I like that riff. I added a drum track to it for shits and gigs, took me about 15 min (had to figure out tempo hiccups)

HERE it is

Can't wait til I can add drums to a full length track ;)

Response to The Metal Collab 2009-06-12 07:44:19

Hey if you guys need another vocalist can I join?

Response to The Metal Collab 2009-06-12 07:44:36

This shit is going to get heavy. :) Looking forward to writing drums out.

Agreed.

Why does it have to be that low? I can't tune down, so i either have to drop out or play harmonies or something.

hey, that's impressive, I recorded that sans metronome. sounds pretty good.

You can play along, the relevant chords in, for example, la-forge's riff are c5, d#5 and f5. if you played a section that was centered around the f5 similar intervals, it wouldn't sound out of place with the rest of the rhythm tracks, and it might offer a nice progression 'upwards'.

I just came up with a riff in 5/4, maybe we can use that too... i'll record it, that may take a while.

Alright this shit's getting good!
I'll record some more riff ideas, if any sound good, we'll go with that.
Oh yeah question: How do you download a song when the page you go to simply has a quicktime player?

I just go to File > Save Page As...
and it allows you to save the .mp3

Of Course, I'll update the page
Also, thanks for that info on the song downloading to gogoro

Sorry for the double post.
We're good on vocalists now, we still need drummers and bassists.
We're doing good, I have another riff idea.

Response to The Metal Collab 2009-06-13 00:19:08

I had an idea for a riff in the car ride home.... i think I've forgotten it.

I'll try and get a couple down soonish.

I really like this idea better than my other one, so I say when it comes to my ideas, we stick with this one. Who agrees?

I'm down with it. Hopefully I'll have some time tomorrow to fiddle with this theme.

Sounds like a plan. I think we should make the riffs I made as the intro and first verse, but that's me.
I'm off to bed for the night, so yeah.
Still need Drummers and bassists.
And Solus, when you get the time, post the lyrics either on the update page, PM me with them, or post them here
Good night

Response to The Metal Collab 2009-06-13 03:47:41

Sweet, it seems you guys have been working on a start. ;)

I'll try messing around with symphonic intros later today.

Here's what I came up with:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QZWRRPV8

Can someone play that in C or whatever?
I could tab it out, but I have to go. Shouldn't be too hard anyway. I fucked up the second measure though, first note is supposed to be an e.

Zhuriel that riff sounds pretty sweet, dude. Nice.

I know this is kinda early, but just as a note for anyone that's going to record a solid chunk of guitar or bass: Do it to a click track and provide us with BPM (to make laying down a drum track alot easier). Or I can always provide anyone a click track or simple drum beat for you to play along with if you'd like that better.

Response to The Metal Collab 2009-06-13 15:15:26

We need to decide on a tempo.

The original riff ideas were around 120, but zhuriel's sounds quite a bit faster than that, though I haven't counted it out. Pure-metal's last riff sounds faster as well.

I would personally be most comfortable with something in the 150 range, though viking metal (if that's still what we're going towards) tends to be fairly slow, but we can do what we want.

I'm going to go ahead and throw a vote out for 150. It's not crazy fast, but I'd be more comfortable with something faster than 120.

Response to The Metal Collab 2009-06-13 15:29:03

My riff is a bit over 180, I didn't count it out either. I had a metronome on at 180, but I ignored it, haha.

I think we should change tempo during the song, something like first 150, then a fast part at 180, back to 150 etc. Higher tempos fit sick solos better, slower tempos sound heavier, so it's maybe a good idea to have both.

I like this idea, but we'll have to hammer out a song structure before we start throwing out random riffs if we wanna do anything like this.

It would also give people direction when making bits. We could establish rough guidelines for key and chord progressions, to keep things arranged nicely.
