I'm finding that working inside of Flash is slowing down my pace significantly while coding. So, I've been trying out other editors and none of them are giving me enough power to get away from the editor provided with Flash, but I simultaneously can't stand the way I am forced to edit in flash. You know, one panel for code and all that jazz.

I saw FAME (for eclipse) and tried it out, but its autocompletion is a little off, and it doesn't do anything nearly as helpful as it does for java. Like, when you open a parenthesis it doesn't tell you what arguments are expected (as Flash does), but the organization feel is a ton better. I just know I'm going to be alt tabbing back to flash for the function look ups and what not.

So, I'm asking you. What's your favorite actionscript editor (outside of Flash), and what features does it provide?

The only really neat thing about FAME is that it lets me compile SWFs from ActionScript 2.0 outside of Flash.

Try Flash Develop
http://www.flashdevelop.org/wikidocs/ind ex.php?title=Main_Page

not only does it have code completion but it will track variables and functions inside of the classes you create and provide code hints/completion for those as well

pressing ctrl+enter inside of flashdevelop will jump to the flash IDE and execute the currently open .fla document

only downside for is the documentation- when you load the language reference in flashdevelop it loads the online version into a tab in the program. which is fine except that I can only get it to load via internet explorer, and it always pops up script errors while I browse.

other than that, it's a great tool

Even then Notepad++ would be and is better if only for the syntax highlighting. I tried editing that way as well. :P

Anyway, I'm liking FlashDevelop so I'm going to keep using it for now.

Thank you. :D

I haven't tried it on my own, but I've heard that Adobe Flex is pretty good, so you may want to check it out.

.NET? hm, I didn't need to install anything extra, perhaps it was already on my machine... doesn't seem to be, unless I'm checking the wrong area.

I'll take a look at that one tomorrow. I'm enjoying FlashDevelop at the moment, but I know the industry tends to favor Flex.

.NET is occasionally needed whenever a developer decides to develop in the .NET framework. It may be a more recent change, or it may be that you previously needed to install it for something else or it was installed along with another program you installed and all of the dlls are just in the right place. I'm familiar enough with .NET, having worked with it before. It just opens new security holes and bogs down the computer, but I like FlashDevelop enough to deal with it.
