It runs faster and has a whole new camera.

However there are ample alternatives like the Omnia HD or the Viewty smart. To name but a few. Even the N97 has an actual qwerty keyboard.

And anyway, nobody's found a way to jailbreak the 3GS. That would be the only reason I'd consider buying one of these. I have a mobile, and I have an iPod. I don't really think I need to buy a merge of the two.

Because Apple are so loved my the press, they always gloss over something that should have been installed on the phone already - video recording. Hell, my Samsung D600E could do that, and it's a few years old.

To reiterate;
A software update cannot change a products hardware. It cannot magically make a camera become a megapixel more powerful or make it able to record video.
It cannot install a more powerful battery, and it cannot make a product run faster (well, that one could go both ways).
Those are HARDWARE improvements, that changes to the actual physical phone itself.

Im sorely disappointed with apple on this one. Apple just wants to give current 3G users a reason to renew their AT&T contracts. Apple not allowing stuff like video recording and voice command to work on 3.0 running on the first generation and 3G iPhones is all just to make people buy the 3GS, not because the first gen or 3G are too slow to run them, which is what Apple claims. We know this since there have been higher resolution video apps available via jail-breaking for a long time, and similar voice command apps - all which have worked fine on all iPhones.
