Same.. there's actually excellent driver support for Linux, especially Ubuntu. Plus there's always community made drivers, in case the developer never made any :) Nvidia always supports Ubuntu though, as do a lot of other companys, but I know Nvidia for sure..

I have Ubuntu installed on a 50gb partition of my laptop HDD, I don't use it as much as Vista because I play a lot of games but I'm a programmer so I do use it whenever I'm programming (unless I need to be on Windows). I love the feel of Ubuntu, it's so fast and pretty.. I find it a much better OS than Vista, and I'm not just saying that to be smug like most people think when Linux users say how good it is compared to Vista.. :/

But the Intel Chipset Drivers aren't the best at the moment, considering my love for Compriz. I know the solution is Open-Source, not official ones.

I have a friend who is really talented with Ubuntu and he was typing a lot of shit into the terminal. I was watching some of the stuff and I said, "You know, you need to Sudo Apt-Get a life!." It was a good one.

Read page one, scroll down about 50% of the page and read what I typed there.

Theres already a Linux Users club, so why make a club dedicated to just one distro out of the hundreds that exist?

The following sentence is true. The previous sentence is false. O_o PARADOX!

Because Ubuntu is generally the most know-of, plus it helps a lot of users getting into Ubuntu. While this club is mainly for discussing problems and asking questions, new users can easily try Ubuntu by using Wubi, something other distros don't have.

I use ubuntu. It's pretty badass, I like it. Don't do much on it, but i like it. I killed my vista (viruses ftw) and since ubuntu is free i just put it in as my new os. I've been liking it so far.

I've gotta say though, IMO openoffice sucks. The damn application takes longer to open then it does for me to actually write anything i would ever need to write.

You can run MS office via Wine if you prefer that.

The only thing that's stopping me from being pure Ubuntu is Steam. I use this program constantly, but WINE absolutely HATES it. I can't get full frames per second (20-30), and I have a slow internet connection, and Wine's network layer doesn't like it either, so I ping 200-300.

I'm currently testing ubuntu in a virtual machine, so far I like it. I was thinking of buying an EEE PC and install ubuntu on it.
I also thought of just using the console when running the EEE PC to save some power. How can I configure Ubuntu to not start any desktop/GUI? So that I don't have to use the graphical loginscreen and THEN switch to a console.

My friend's grandmother needs a new operating system. She has no idea how to do anything on a computer, she just uses it for email.

Would Ubuntu work for such an application? I have absolutely no knowledge of Ubuntu/Linux, but I'm tech-savvy, so anything that needs to be explained, please do.

Also, if there are any other distros of Linux that would work better, don't hold back.

Just set your screensaver to blank and use a really short timer, like 1 minute. Ubuntu doesn't have processes that require a lot of CPU when it's idle (depends on what you install of course). Otherwise, try sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (that stops the GUI).

@ TheSneakyFrench

Yes, that would work great. After you've installed Ubuntu, you're good to go. There's already an email application and Firefox installed by default. All the drivers should be installed automatically. For such basic tasks, you really don't have to have any knowledge of the CLI.

Thanks for your answer. Shortly before I read this I read on another page that I could simply uninstall GDM, which works quite well. If I now need a GUI I can simply start it with 'startx'.
