I hate to go straight for the simplest answer here, but it helps Newgrounds.com accumulate the money needed to actually, you know, run. At certain times in the history of the site, particularly during the Dot-Com bubble burst of the early 2000s, this site has taken in a considerable amount from ad cash that could've decided the fate of Newgrounds.
On top of that, ads aren't specifically chosen to be shown as far as I believe. Hell, some of the ads I see here are pretty inappropriate given the characteristics of the community. Do you know any users looking for breakdown cover from RAC? If so, tell them to pay close attention to their banner. Still, it doesn't bother me personally, and it keeps this place going.
And I've seen stranger ads here, some of them from around the time I signed up. Good times?
