The Iraq war would be reported more often

And the stimulus package would be 1/2 to 2/3rds the current size.

nothing else really.

Fiscal spending would be about the same, but less would be blown on bailouts and more on National defense. Also, the white house would take a firm stance against abortion and be much more conservative on social issues of that persuasion.

I don't know about anyone else, but I would have liked to see a Gore-McCain contest in 2000. You know, when McCain was himself.

There's a lot to speculate about in that case. Who would have been his running mate? (I say Tom Ridge.) How would he have handled 9/11 and other incidents? Would he have had two terms?

That's what I had hoped for in 2000 and am still amazed that George Bush pulled off the nomination.

As far as the about face McCain did, I dunno, I personally suspected that at least some of that was done just to get elected and once he was in he'd be back to more moderate stances. But obviously, I had no insider info to back that up, had to vote based on the John McCain that he was presenting himself to be at the time.

With the latest election the choice seemed to me to be far less black and white than usual. McCain was't so much the bad guy so much as not the one I felt was best.
With him I think that the approach that's being taken to healthcare right now wouldn't be happening. The bailouts would be mostly the same because there's no way that after the first round (under Bush) they would ever let another round of free gifts go by.
As far as the war, a republican white house would be more prone to try and "finish" than to just leave. I put finish in quotes because there's just no way to solve all that areas problems.

I recently read a book where McCain wrote an introduction: "Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam". It stood out; not because it was touching, but because you could tell he was writing it as a politician, instead of as a soldier. Still a great book though, one of the best I've read on Vietnam.

Two possible answers.

1) McCain would be very moderate. What some people don't realize is that McCain is moderate for a Republican, but he had to act conservative for this election to get the right wing vote.

2) Dare I say it? President Palin. But let's not go there and be thankful Obama won.

McCain's policies during his Presidential run and McCain's policies now are two different things. That always happens: when a party is the minority in the government, they always have good ideas. When they're the majority in the government, they always screw everything up with their terrible ideas.

There's no way to say how good or bad McCain would've been as President simply because no one knows if he would've changed his policies like he did recently.

The same if George W. Bush was elected for a third time.

It wouldn't be that much better than Obama. But at least McCain has the political experience to have at least the slightest idea what the fuck he's doing.

This early in office, not much. McCain would probably know more about what he was doing and the spending would be distributed differently.

I would say the biggest change would be the speeches, with McCain saying...something, over Obama repeating to the point of redundancy "I'm Obama, and I will bring about change".

Why are wasting your time reading this?

Couldn't be much worse than President Obama already is.

in 2004 we had Bush (who spent 4 years butchering the english language and led a war that wasn't going nearly as well as planned) vs Kerry (a guy whose idea to promote his military service didn't go nearly as well as planned)

in 2008 we had McCain (a really old fart) and Palin (who has very limited political experience) vs Obama (who has very little political experience AND IT SHOWS) and Biden (a really old fart)

I wonder what 2012 will hold? Some big name movie star vs some big name porn star?

Baka......

Oh right, because McCain would have ended waterboarding, shut down Gitmo, and lifted the ban on stem cell research.

This.

But since the question is what if specifically John McCain were president:

-War: experienced soldier, which I would hope would result in a better commander-in-chief than we'd had the eight years previous. And I believe that would indeed be the case.
-Economy: we'd probably still have the bailouts, price of gas wouldn't be too different. Not much change here.
-Immigration: much stricter, especially on the southern border.
-Foreign policy: ...well, no one would be accusing McCain of being apologetic, that's for sure. Beyond that I honestly don't know.
-Justice appointee: no clue. Probably not Sotomayor, and definitely no one with a history of gay rights support.
-Social issues: not the President's call, so no real effect.
-Assault weapon ban: what ban?

If I'm missing anything, it's probably outside my consciousness at the moment.

Still...President Palin. I'd be leading the secession movement.

there would be less consern on ending the iraq war, and more money spent on national defence. Also, in the off chance that he passed away while in office.. our country would be royally screwed.
the amount of spending would not change much, as there would have been less company bailouts. also, the stimulus package would probably only be about 1/2 its current size
