By freeing/killing the caterpillar, you've also affected the spider, who worked hard to get it's meal.

Actually can I make it clear that this was not a spiders web, or thread. Some caterpillars naturally let themselves down from their trees on a small silk string. Im not sure why, but I know some caterpillars do that. You will see them hanging off trees a couple of feet of the floor.

The fall? A couple of feet shouldn't have killed the caterpillar. Insects are tough creatures. It was more likely to have survived. Perhaps it was playing dead after being disturbed. If it did die, it was probably ill or something to not survive.
