Today I went to see Terminator 3 with my grandparents, and then after that, we ate at a restaurant. When we finished eating, my grandma turned to me and said, "Your father is working tonight, so if you don't want to be at home all by yourself, you can come over and hang out with us". I told her I would be fine. She said, "Oh... Ok". She looked really sad. "We have HBO, you know..."
My grandpa said angrily, "He doesn't want to hang out with us, just leave him alone." (they fight a lot).
So then my grandma wrote down their home phone number, handed it to me and said, "Well, if you ever get bored or lonely, just give us a call and we'd be happy to come and pick you up".
I don't understand. They call my dad almost every day asking to hang out with us, and almost every time, we do.
Why are grandparents so sad and lonely?

When they were alive, I spent a lot of time with them. They tell great stories and they think everything you do is incredible and they make great food and they support you no matter what unless you are being an idiot in which case they will point that out because they love you.

Ah shit, I forgot to say, if you feel like an asshole, then call them and make up for it. Go see them again and this time make it your idea and not theirs. They'll appreciate the gesture very much, and you'll alleviate some of that guilt as well. Go on man, give them old timers some more fond memories. That's the great thing about grandparents, give them some quality family time and they're all good.

I'm sure we'll all know when we're older. But really I think it's because they like still being a part of the world. I mean, they're old so they're relatively close to death (I know that sounds bad but you understand) so they try to still stay involved with the people they love as much as they can before they snuff it.

This is a great time to have those party type of games which are somewhat easy to play. Kinda like mario party but not the other sucky minigame wii games. I'm sure you can have some fun.

Man, god damn, I am a cruel person but even I know that my grandparents are on their last legs and it's not loneliness, it's regret and realization that they're going to die and missed out on a lot of things during their lives. If I could take it all back I would have spent every moment with my grandpa, he is on his deathbed, he is going to die poor and he just wants so badly to walk again and be able to love his children. I can't even show my face to the man without feeling like I did so much less than him and have let him down completely. If it kills you, hang out with them, because it kills them even more.
They must not have friends. Take them to a social event.
