Making a saw-like bass 2009-06-02 20:08:10

I'm trying to make a nice trance bass, preferably a Saw. I've been messing around with the cent and filter, but nothing seems to come through crisp and deep. Any suggestions?

By the way, I'm running Reason 4.0.

bass? saw? Crisp? Deep? Quite a few paradoxes you have going there. Regardless, you can hit those aesthetics pretty easily a number of ways. One solution is to simply layer a few different synths to get a deeper sound as you might do to your drum kit. Make a sub bass by initializing a subtractor patch, then make a sub bass using the sine waves. Play with a few of the parameters until you think you have something nice there. Then open up an instance of the malstrom, load up the sawtooths into the oscillators then add some distortion for a little bit of fun. You can also play with the treble parameter in the mixer to get some crisper sounds. One thing I've noticed is that if you play with automating the filters on the malstrom, you can create the illusion of a bass sound because the frequencies getting cut turns the sawtooth into a sine (at least, I'm assuming that. I'll wait for someone to correct me there so we can both learn something.)

Now, you asked for a trance lead, but you might learn a thing or two from watching either of these two videos: link 1 link 2

Those go over how to get those dnb sawtooth leads, which isn't necessarily what you were asking for, but they defiantly have that crisp/deep sound.

If you're using FL (whatever) use the most simple yet powerful synth (the ts404) and adjust knobs. That backwards "N" is the saw symbol. Keep clicking and adjusting until awesome comes out!

create a Thor, initialize standard patch, then add a Saw oscillator, add a Low Pass Ladder Filter, play with knobs at your will, increase Drive at about halfway, add a Comb Filter, increase Drive, and play.
