wtf? Running through the ambient submissions today...and totally gotset off dude. Apparently a definition of ambient music needs to be made to the general population, allow me;
http://www.imeem.com/artists/aphex_twin/
album/H3k1jmAz/selected-ambient-works-85 -92-album/
http://www.imeem.com/artists/boards_of_c anada/album/Xn4zLn6U/music-has-the-right -to-children-album/
http://www.imeem.com/damianh/music/dMGEj GoU/solo-andata-her-face-soft-as-sleep/
thats the best I could do on iMeem, but there are a few good examples of ambient tunes, aside from one or two exceptions; i.e. Aphex Twin's "Green Calx" on his "Selected Ambient Works" album. That track is totally not ambient, at all...in anyway, i dunno how it made it onto that album honestly...it's acid...*shrug* aphex twin does what he wants. The point is that ambient music is relax, has an overtone carrying the song throughout, and has a light beat. Where you guys get the idea that acid bass, and dance beats are cool throughout ambient, I dunno...chill the fuck out, ambient is exactly what the word implies; fucking ambient, meant to be mostly ignored and set a mood for whatever the situation might be.

I didn't realize anybody actually cared about genres. I've put all my songs in the "ambient" genre myself, I could not possibly care less if they're actually ambient or not. I think genre labels are rubbish.
You could go on and talk about how almost none of the submissions in "techno" fit in the techno genre as well, same thing with jazz, classical, heavy metal, new wave etc. We could all put our submissions in "miscellaneous"

Actually, yeah...sounds like you are doing it right. Grats...good song too, btw.
Regardless, genres exist for a reason. To classify music for the ease of discovering it. If one genre/classification/category is plagued with a bunch of shit that doesnt fit, especially in a database of music with limited categories (i.e. newgrounds) stuff that fits really well and ought be recognized is ignored for the stuff that doesnt fit, yet somehow suits the desires of the listener...if you oblige the rules of a genre, you make the exposure and discovery of music as a whole more efficient and effective. If you ignore it...kinda makes you wonder why classification even exists.

well with the limited categories NG has, sometimes it's the best choice even if it doesn't really fit. Notice the same effect with other genres?

I sure as hell know what ambient is. And going by a textbook definition of it doesnt help anyone. Ambient incorporates many different things.

God yeah man, I wish they'd make a million different genres like "Satanic Black Metal" and "Deep Minimal House-Pop", just so I don't have to listen to another damned down-tempo song in the ambient section.
It's ridiculous.

If I am looking through the classical music section or the Jazz section, and I find a hip-hop song or a heavy noisecore, I would be rather confused and very annoyed.
Really, it's about letting people find the music in the style they prefer to hear, not about restricting music to any one set of definitions. So yeah, just because you are so hardcore with labeling all your songs ambient doesn't mean that that is the golden standard to audio submissions.

Sure, there's "ambient".
There's also ambient house, ambient breaks, ambient psy, ambient goth (called darkwave or ethereal), ambient trance, and last of all ambient techno.
Oh, and then there are the genres of ambient/psychedelic rock, and the original experimental type ambient like music concrete.
What I'm getting it is that the intended purpose matters more than the actual parts of the track themselves. Sure, it could have a house beat, but if it was intended to be played in the background of a clothing store late at night rather than at a club, it's probably ambient house, and therefore it's still ambient.

This says what I'm thinking, albeit in a nicer manner. It makes my blood boil when elitists start telling people how their music should sound. I don't make music to fit a genre, I just make music that I think sounds good. I don't care what genre it is, I only care that it's music, so honestly, I don't care where other musicians put their music in the NG audio portal. Oh no! A few stray songs in the ambient section of the audio portal. Here's a protip for the OP, no one really gives a fuck. It's just music. On the internet. Get over it.

yeah, we still have the genres and we should respect them (atleast a little, e.g. no Techno in Country and so on). If you don't give a fuck about anything, submit to miscellaneous. I mean, the genres are here for a reason: to keep things organized. It's nice to browse through a list of one genre and not of ALL genres. So you don't have to listen to every piece just to make sure it's not the kind of song you were looking for. I know it's the internet and we are at NG where no one gives a shit but hey...when Tom redesigns the AP in 2020, we could kindly ask him to trash all those genres and replace them with 'Cock Jokes'.

i wish people actually could label their own works a bit better, it would help us music-searchers immensley :(
but then again, the genre-selection isn't the most awesome either, so yea...

Almost every song I upload, someone says it's in the wrong genre... so when I upload my next song in the genre they said it should be in, someone else complains that it's in the wrong genre.
My point?
Who gives a shit?

I'll start putting all my songs in the hip hop section, then.
Fuck the establishment, yeah!
I'll show how non-conformist I am by putting my string quartets in the R&B section, because only elitists and pricks use genres to only restrict music to confining definitions!

You don't need to remove submissions in order to change the genre, just go to the page to edit it and change the category.
I hope/think you know that already and were using sarcasm, but I couldn't help but make sure. :)

I'm sure people know this already but alot of people post music in another gendre simply to hide their song from zero bombers.. (Or rather they think they are hiding them) Once upon a time no one down voted in the Misc area in the AP and the trick to get top 30 and top five was to post in there. So if you find something that doesn't belong in there chances are the person didn't care or is doing exactly what i'm saying.
or i could be full of shit?

Nice Necro, Brah.
Also, I guess the tags do help with the Genre, though I just slap acid and space on everything. Like, who cares?
