I'm interested in making 8-bit style music, but can't seem to find any good programs. I'm not looking to get into the tech-heavy chiptune programs, I just want something nice and simple that can be used on my computer alone.
Can anybody help with this?

You'll want a piece of software called a tracker. Trackers are the traditional way of making 8 bit music, and haven't changed much in design or form factor since their conception in the late 80s/early 90s. Milkytracker is a good place to start.

Or you can fake it with FL if you have it. Tweakbench has some sweet VSTs for that 8 bit feel, or you can just use 3xosc.

I'm sure logic has a simple subtractive synth. Use it, love it.

And this is the best 8bit VST that I found until now ;). Its very easy to use and its a very low end VST.
Just do a google search and you will find it for sure.

i tried using the ES P Polysynth and the monosynth in logic basics.. its a bitch to create the exact sounds you want out of it.. i spent a few hours trying to make 8 bit sounds and im still not satisfied with them..
it could be im just doing it wrong. i mean the sounds kinda sound 8 bit, but getting that authentic atari or NES sound is pretty hard for me...
If anyone has screenshots of how they set up the ESP Polysynth for 8 bit for the basics of an 8 bit song that would be awesome, or even better a link to a tutorial of the settings needed.. i have searched the internet without luck. and that magic 8 bit plugin doesnt work with my mac setup.. so basically its either a plugin i need or some help setting up synths.
i really wanna bust out an awesome 8 bit track ... i wanna bust it out Haaaarrd. :)

Magical 8-Bit Plug
This. 100% free.
I use this all the time. (Have 6 more 8-bit tracks on the up-and-coming and I plan to release them all at once)
Magical 8-bit Plugin saved my life.

Nobody mentioned FamiTracker? It's a tracker for the A203 sound chip for Windows.

The best 8-bit VST I can recommend is the YMCK Magical 8-bit plugin. It has square, triangle, noise, 12.5 and 25 pulse waves and settings to mess around with.
It's the best for making traditional 8-bit NES-style music. But if you're going for a more modern chiptune feel then I suggest using MilkyTracker.

MadTracker 2 is great and free. It comes with the typical saw, square, tri, sine, etc. plus some amazing VST synths included.

Well, there is the whole issue of no wave output... MadTracker 3, whenever it's finished, will be open source, however. I'm not sure about free, but that might be so, too.

If you have no problem with writing it out as a MIDI first, you can use a swell program called GSXCC. It plays MIDI files as 8-BIT, and will process the song into .WAV, which can easily be rendered into MP3. It's what I use, I'll provide a page link for you:
