3.80 / 5.00 4,200 ViewsI read in my local paper today a Republican state committee member Carol Carter sent an e-mail - quote- " Amazing , I'm confused . How can 2 million blacks get into Washington, D.C. in one day in sub-freezing temperatures, when 200,000 couldn't get out of New Orleans in 85 degree temperatures with 4 days notice ."
While I can see that this could & has been taken in a negative manner.
It IMO has some merit.
After all how can the available transportation systems handle such a massive movement of people in such a short period of time ? ? ? yet in New Orleans , all those people were stranded & for much longer than a day?
Does anyone else see any merit in trying to answer such questions ?
or -Do you only see it as a person making a racist commet ? ... which I don't personally find derogatory. It's somewhat insensative & ill considered when you think about it ...you all of course may not agree.
I don't often make threads, but this is the first i've ever heard of this story & her firing ...is also IMO over the top for the comment made , but what do you guys think ?-More

The 2 million that went to DC would have been preparing for such a descent for an extended period of time, thus allowing them to make prepartions. The ones stuck in New Orleans were poor and given 4 days notcie meaning they couldn't make prepartations to actually get out.
Also, I'd like too see the break down of the sorts of people that amde up those 2 million that went to DC. What are the bets that they are all actually not that poor, as in are able to actually save money and not live hand to mouth, which we know was not the case for those stuck in New Orleans.
So yeah... racist? *shrug* Possibly, couldn;t give a rats arse either way. Idiotic? Yup, almost certainly.

Good reply Tri. I don't have any of that information in the article i read it was more about intolerance swinging the other way & anything can now be considered racial & you lose your job.
But What I would be curious to know is & it would probalby take a fair amount of work to find out..., Does Washington have a much better rapid transit systems .
Is there just more availability...or did the Government make changes /additions to help with the influx of expected people...& if that was the case, why wouldn't such measures be used to help people like the poor that were trapped in New Orleans. Especially with 4 days notice.
I have been there (New Orleans) since the hurricane & in the French Quarter (where I spent most of my time) several local people told me they chose to stay & prepared by stocking water & propane, non perishable food & they had no real problems except inconvience. & they didn't actually flood, they just got damp was the expresion used a couple of times.

So, the hurricane only affected black people?
This is what we call "a funny racist joke".
Which means two things:
1. If you don't think it's a joke and you're laughing, you're probably racist
2. If you're trying to actually explain the question in the joke, you don't understand what a joke is.
Anyway, who did she send that email to? Why is it on the news?
:o
When you're dirt poor and living in New Orleans you can't get up and leave your home permanently whenever you want. You can take a train to DC for one day but you can't move there.
I also find it funny how she only mentioned black people as being the annoying problem.
Siggy
Feeling angsty?

;;;
It only says "people on her e-mail list"
It's in an article in our local paper about Obama , and some of the things that have made the news which are controversial/racist , like (another example in the story) a want ad in a local Pennsylvania paper, where the person who put in an ad saying " May Obama follow in the steps of Lincoln, Garfeild, Mckinley & Kennedy " -which were 4 US Presidents who were assassinated in office. That ones obviously a racist comment, but her e-mail got me wondering about not so much blacks ,although they were most affected. But how you move that amount of people safely & quickly in and out of a city, especially when you see the amount who attended the inauguration ceremony in Washington.
