Swine Flu in Australia!!!

Well there's swine flu floating around everywhere, the first recorded case in Australia was only 21 days ago and yesterday there were 207 confirmed cases. Sooo in the spirit of good taste, I thought why not get some bets going? When do you think the number of cases will pass the 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000 mark? You aren't going to win anything, but whoever does get them all right can pretend to be either really psychic or really smart.

I did a few rough calculations based on the date of the first and the current case count, and here are my bets:
1,000: June 4th
10,000: June 12th
100,000: June 21st

I think they're gonna go way down in June, things like the flu aren't really active during the summer. Starting fall I think it will be worse than ever though.

Everyone has lost interest every since the media stopped killing the news. Now, when people think of the swine they think of "Oh yea, that disease that was never really bad". If people continue to ignore it, it will only spread faster.

Hence, here are my predictions..

10,000 July 4th
100,000 July 25th

Yeah but... has it even been bad? Apart from paranoid people on the train wearing covering over their mouth and nose I've seen no sign of it. I'll be a lot more surprised to see an outbreak of it than I will to never hear of it again.

Exactly. The media loves to tell sensationalist stories and news coverage to generate sales. The more outlandish the headlines, the more likely people are to buy it.

The general population need to work out that most of the crap they read on a daily basis is absolute garbage and completely fabricated half of the time. I gave up on conventional news a long time ago.

Although swine flu could of been potentially bad just by the nature that its a mutating virus, even the worst case scenarios by most scientists weren't what the media portrayed it to be ie the end of the world.
But yea who cares about it spreading it causes very few deaths in the people that it infects.

I suggest you people don't worry all too much, because the area of Australia is hot. It's so hot, that the flu will just go awee wee wee and oink itself out you see. If anything you people should be happy you live in the hot so the flu doesn't spread you see, in Shelburne there's a bit of panic coz of theres a case over in Greenfield possibly. In the morning I might talk to Camille and ask that we go to Australia to wait the whole thing out because between you and me, the whole Pig sickness concerns me just of a little bit.

despite what you all might think, australia isnt some tropical paradise that is a balmy 35 all year round. winter officially starts tomorrow, and the disease only got here a few weeks ago. the government is quarantining families that come into contact with the disease, and schools have been shut down in certain areas. its pretty similar to the normal flu, which means old people and young children are at the greatest risk. and if the disease keeps spreading at this rate some experts think that 1/5 will get it. That's about 2 million.

im not realy worried for my own safety. but i dont want to get quarantined and i have family members who would be at a greater risk of dying from the disease. plus who wants to get the flu anyway?

Apparently someone in my college was exposed to the guy who had it, because he/she was on the same bus as him. Also, three students from another residential college have been quarantined as well.

The college send around a newsletter trying to dispel rumours that Swine Flue was floating around the college, and we're all going to die.

Also the regular flu has been around thousands of years more.

But anyway, guys, those predictions, COULD and possibly WOULD have happened if it weren't for Mexico. They stopped their country, economics schools, everything to halt it. It worked. We are taking drastic action making the flu die before it really becomes a problem. Even with all these billions of dollars lost, still around a thousand have died, or 300 or something, whatever. And many thousand have caught it.

You people only look at results, not actions, this could have been very serious if we reacted differently, or less, if this much happened with all this? How much would have without any action?
