...and what I started thinking about was slightly scary.

I get around 8 hours sleep every day, which seems like a reasonable amount. So this means that I spend 16 hours of my day awake. The 8 hours that I spend asleep makes up a third of my day, so I must spend at least a third of my lifetime sleeping.

If you were to live until the age of 99, in theory you will have spent 33 years asleep if you average out with 8 hours of sleep a day. To me, this seems like such a large part of what is described as a "short time on earth" wasted. I understand that some people like sleeping, but do you like it enough to "waste" 33 years of your life?

I know we all need sleep and there is not a lot we can do about this.I also understand that everyone will have different opinions on the matter, and there will be those who will laugh and make jokes, but seriously, stop and think. How does it make YOU feel to know that you spend around a third of your life asleep?

Wow, actually kinda scary... That's why I Think sleeping is a waste of life. If we didn't need sleep, we could do so much more.

If you don't sleep then you won't live to be 99.

There is that one farmer guy who hasn't slept in like 30 years.

He said one day he just didn't need to.

But sleeping is a blissful experience, assuming you're not having a nightmare. Anyway how can you say you're wasting time when you are sleeping when you can't remember most dreams?

I understand that, but what I was asking is how do you feel knowing that a third of your life is spent in sleep? A third is a large fairly large portion of anything.

Please re-read the question, the answer you gave was more fitting of the question "is sleep necessary", which I did not ask.

The point of this thread was to see how people react when they know that they spend a third of their life asleep. Whether I remember my dreams or not is irrelivant. I just feel that a third of my life is a lot of time to be spent sleeping. Time which I would rather have spent enjoying more of the world.

I dont believe its quite that simple. I watched a documentary about these drugs you can take where you only need to take like two 40minute naps a day to get by. It seemed amazing. i'd be well up for it. They keep you awake but if you try and sleep you can.

Well not bothered really, seeing as we HAVE to sleep to survive. So the fact that we sleep actually adds to our lives instead.

I'm more concerned about the time we spend wasting our lives on video games and the internet. And I include myself in that assessment.

Dreams disturb the concept of reality and allow you to do everything you want limited by your imagination, so it's not wasted.

I understand where you are coming from. Out of curiosity, how would you define the meaning of life? Hard question I know, but my answer would be that we are to have the most fun possible in the time we are given.

If people enjoy spending their time on video games or enjoy sleeping (trying to stay on topic), then they are not really wasting their time. So it is fair that some people do not feel that playing video games (or sleeping) is a waste of their time.

I still feel that although it is required, a third of our life is a lot to be giving away and there isn't much you can do about it.

I don't know why I have gone all philosophical today. It isn't like me.

I don't believe there is a meaning of life. I don't get why people make a big thing our of it. Does there have to be a meaning to this all? The way I see it, we're just here, and that's it. What we do in our lives will make no difference once the end comes.

If people enjoy spending their time on video games or enjoy sleeping (trying to stay on topic), then they are not really wasting their time. So it is fair that some people do not feel that playing video games (or sleeping) is a waste of their time.

Yeah I enjoy playing games, and using sites like this that consume my time and watching shows that won't matter to me in like a few years time, we all do this stuff and all we get out of it is a bit of fun and time passed. Really. =3

I still feel that although it is required, a third of our life is a lot to be giving away and there isn't much you can do about it.

Well I think 8 hours (While advised by doctors) is too much to sleep. 6-7 hours is what I think we should be aiming for.

I don't know why I have gone all philosophical today. It isn't like me.

Nothing wrong with change =P

I don't think I do enough worthwhile things when I'm awake to constitute calling sleep wasted time.

Jokes aside it doesn't really bother me, what else can we do in the time we could be sleeping? Pushing ourselves through the night until we sleep through the day? Meh, its just how things go.

Sleep only 6 hours a day(not much difference) and you only spend 24~25 years sleeping, granting yourself an extra 9 years of life.

See it this way, Sleep is a part of life, your not losing life to sleep, because its life, it's not like you die and come again after sleep.

But it makes up for it in a way, why? well when sleeping you sure as hell aren't put on hold for those actual 8 hours you sleep, more like 30 seconds, to an hour ( dreams etc ) and maybe even nothing.

You arent waiting 33 years of your life or wasting it, your using it too keep healthy and functional, even if you did manage 4 hours of sleep for 80 years, in some manner or form, it affected you, and keeping 4 hours a day would probably come back upon you in some amount of time sooner or later.

My 8 hour sleep per day thing was just my average time spent sleeping on a week night. In general I go to sleep around 11PM and wake up at 7AM for school. Seeing as I don't have school anymore, I don't have to get up early until I start University in Spetember. Hopefully this way I can now rescue some of the time that I have labled as "wasted".

Although I accpet your oppinion on the matter I am not trying to get you to change my outlook sleep itself. For now my oppinion will remain as it stands. It is more the math that scares me. Yes I know we need sleep in order to survive and I understand that it is a requirement of good health. I am not trying to deny that. My thoughts are that a third is a big fraction, and I wish that it did not have to be spent in the form of sleep. My example of 33 years is to me, in a way, frightening. That is almost twice as long as I have been alive.

Well, cats spend two-thirds of their lives sleeping and they lived much shorter lives, so at least you're far better off than say, a cat.

Sleep is sort of a necessity. The part that I worry about is how much of that waking time is spent just thinking about doing things vs actually doing them.
