Is there any avs fans here, or am I a black man walking into a KKK meeting? We finally lost sakic, and last season was the worst I've ever seen them do. It's really sad. Usually the avs are the one team in sports that I like. that I can depend on to do well.

Well, I'm an Avs fan, right here. Guilty as charged, one might say.

We finally lost sakic, and last season was the worst I've ever seen them do.

It's sad to see Super Joe hang up his skates, but we all knew it was inevitable. He might have come back for another year if we were a competitive team.

Well, we've sucked ass for about the past 4 seasons, so it's no real big surprise. The good thing that we've done is get some decent draft picks out of sucking so badly. I wish we'd have sucked like this when Malkin was available to draft >:(

This should be an interesting Battle of Alberta. Edmonton might actually have a chance, with the Habibulin Wall. Flurry is back, and the Winter games are right around the corner. I anticipate an exciting series of BOAs, no Dark soldier?

Nice, just stood up into the guy's jaw and knocked him [Kyle Okposo] down. Mild concussion is the diagnosis so far. Pascal Morencey gets an indefinate suspension for jumping onto the ice to go after Dion.

Well, the Northwest is going to be tight, except for the Avs, I think. Theo isn't as quick as he used to be and the Bulin Wall is getting a little old. The Berlin Wall lasted for 45 years (metaphorically - physically only 28 years, but the metaphor falls apart here...) so he might have some years left in him at 36, plus he's coming off a good year - 30-8; .919 sv%; 2.33 GAA, for the Hawks.

The Oilers are a very different team from last year - it'll be interesting, to say the least.

No contract with anyone yet - if he can't get a team, he'll probably do a Barry Bonds and retire by proxy - No-one wants him, he won't play.

Looks like Craig Anderson is settling into the starter's role at Pepsi Centre. Putting on a clinc to shut out the Canucks 3-0. A couple of fights to finish the game off as well - suspensions pending?

First 2-0 start since 2001. Hopefully it's a sign of things to come. I don't know if I can take another bad year from them. They're usually my guys I can count on in sports because all the other teams I like suck ass. Not much of a fair weather fan. :P

Well, the Avs are now another in a long line of teams from various sports that I've stuck with through thick and thin. Sure, I'd like to see it get thick again soon, but we'll see, as the season is still young. Avs goalies managed a combined 32-45 record with 2 shutouts (both for Budaj) Small steps, but with 80 games left, Anderson has half of the shutouts that the whole team managed.

I'll be happy with improved mediocrity this year, as our guys cut their teeth in the NHL. I dare not dream of what might be just yet.

NHL 10
-------
I've played and bought every single EA sports NHL game ever made.

I know that sounds ridiculous, but literally from age 2, i've been playing NHL. The game has changed a lot from the original NHL Hockey title that came out, but the sad part is that most of the features EA developed over the years in the 90's are JUST making their way back in to the games today.

Game Modes: Be a GM is the new highlight of NHL 10, and features almost a completely rebuilt engine from the previous installments "Dynasty Mode". New to the game are upgrades! You can upgrade your staff members and make your team better! But wait, didn't they have upgrade way back in 2003-2004? And weren't there actually THREE TIMES as many? Yes there certainly were. The Be a GM mode also features the new smart trading system. Yes. Smart. Where Dion Phaneuf was smartly traded to the Los Angeles Kings for Jonathan Quick. Most of the trades turn out to be incredibly ridiculous, and big name players end up with a trade value equal to that of a sack of bricks. It's supposed to be an improvement over the earlier practically non-existent trade AI we've seen in every single game since, but in reality it just spawns ridiculous trade after ridiculous trade.

Battle for the cup caught a lot of flack, but in actuality is perhaps the only game mode they did right. Although it does take away the glory of playing an entire season and sippin' gin and juice from Lord Stanley.

And finally, Be A Pro! Everybody is talking about Be a Pro mode and how amazing it is! And to be completely honest, I don't know what the hell these people are talking about. Be A Pro is with out a doubt the most boring game mode ever invented. Now hear me out all you Be A Pro fanboys. EVERY SINGLE GAME you spend going back and forth up and down the ice while your teammates make stupid play after stupid play. When you get the puck, there's actually very little you can do with it besides skating blandly up the ice otherwise you lose points in position and team play. Half the time you're sitting on the bench. Aside from goalie mode, Be A Pro is a complete snore. If they just simply allowed you to play as THE ENTIRE TEAM instead of this position lock nonsense, there would literally be NO problems.

The AI in this game is as stupid as all of it's predecessors, creativity is at the absolute minimum. The computer players go to the same spots. Make the same passes and do the same plays every time. This can be solved be creating your own plays, but when the ice gets covered in stupid green trigger-circles it ceases to feel like a hockey game and more like a five year old drew all over the screen. I play every game on the hardest difficulty possible, and I still win 7-1 every time. All my goals end up looking the same, two on one last second one timers or deking around their entire team to score. The AI NEVER tries anything new, and it's very frustrating and unrealistic.

Board Play + Tough Guy: Board play is an interesting addition as it genuinely adds a more hockey feel to the game. The problem is there is very little strategy involved in board play besides randomly hitting poke check and stick lift, which more than likely hands you a high-sticking/slashing/tripping penalty. It just needs to be tweaked better, and it feels like most of the new additions were throw in the game in the last month while EA spent the other 11 months of the year on the beach rolling around in money. The fights are awesome. Sorta. At least it's a gigantic improvement over the previous years. But every fight still ends the same with the same animation, seemingly random who ends up getting hurt. Plus there are no fight replays? Take a page out of UFC Unleashed and throw in the last devastating hit in super slow motion. Plus, where's the blood and bruises? I know kids play this game, but kids ALSO watch hockey. Where people get bloodied and bruised. What's worse for them to see? A simulator or the real thing?

The worst part about fighting in this game is actually the LIMIT of the fights. You can only have five fights a game. No matter what. Absolute maximum. Once you reach five fights, you get the pleasure of hearing that idiot Bill Clement say "LETS GET ER GOIN" or "HOW BOUT, FIVE TO GO?", or my all-time favorite "WHY I OUGHTTTA". This guy almost single handedly ruins the game.

Leg lift: Perhaps the only shining light amongst additions. The leg lift completely changes the deking scheme for the better. Although completely unrealistic, it sure looks pretty to pirouette around the ice and the defenders.

Knee shots: Pretty cool, certainly. Again, unrealistic in terms of frequency, since I only ever saw one person drift towards the net on their knees last year and it was Kovalchuk trying some crappy deke in the all-star skills comp

Injury System: The injury system is much improved however still incredibly retarded. Post Concussion Syndrome out for a week? But I broke Boyle's stupid nose and he was gone for 3 months? Huh?

THINGS MISSING FROM NHL 10: Sticks breaking, Helmets popping off, falling shots, cross-league trades, REAL draft prospects, HIGHLIGHTS from other games, being able to see Boxscores from other games, realism, zambonis, four refs, REAL goalie masks?, players shouting profanities at eachother, shots of Brian Burke frowning in the press box, spinoramas and other unique dekes, Trevor Daley being a BLACK GUY, nets popping off?, BROKEN GLASS, Ovie's lack of teeth, blood, realistic puck handling, turnbuckle hits, hits INTO benches, hitting refs, Why don't goalies fight or get involved in scrums??, actual facewash button/takedown button, tip the puck button?, video review, Skills competition, Off-season training?, pre-season games, etc. etc. etc.

I could literally write a list of things missing for hours, substituting out the jokes with actual things missing. Most of these features they actually HAD in earlier NHL installments but scraped for unknown reasons years ago. Don't get me wrong, this is still a fantastic game, but I can't help but feel that if I worked at EA myself it would be made hundreds of times better and hundreds of times more realistic.

Most of my issues with NHL 10 stem from the actual lack of any change from the previous year. The biggest problem of which being the Create-A-Team option, which for some reason is largely ignored every year. You can choose from the same 18 or so logos they've made you choose from for the past 3 years. Incredibly lame. Not only that, but for some reason your logo doesn't even appear on center ice? They had that feature years ago, what changed that you have to have every create a team with a huge EA SPORTS logo in the middle? In previous years, Create-A-Team was much more advanced, allowing you to customize your area right down to the seat colors, it would even show the place in which your arena was located, accompanied by Jim Hughson saying something like "HERE WE ARE, IN PORTLAND OREGON".. which brings me to my next qualm...

The commentators. The commentary is extremely terrible. I can't understand why it continues to get glowing reviews, because not only is it exactly the same as last year, the few added sentences are completely retarded. I've become convinced the Bill Clement is a child molester, since every game he seems to talk about Men against Boys, and c'mon boys, boys boys boys. Even some of the new phrases he talks about boys. Gary Thorne is incredibly bland, aside from his occasion raps and rhymes which leave me giggling, he practically puts you to sleep each game. Bring back Jim Hughson already, there's something magically about hearing GREAT SAVE LUONGO in his silky smooth voice that makes hockey just feel right

Buy it. It's awesome. But if you're a hockey fanatic and you've played as many NHL games as I have you'll be incredibly, incredibly let down. And already looking forward to next year when EA decides to throw in Ovy's stupid sunglasses and sunhat as unlockables, bolstering the already stripped down game with a bunch more useless Be a Pro additions.

Long ass, but great review.

You should send this in an email to EA Games. I agree about 95% with your review. They definitely need to reconfigure the realism in their NHL Games. It's ridiculous that they just keep crapping out the same game over and over every year with almost no changes. Same with Madden....

Anyways. How bout them AVS! I'm finally ecstatic about a start of a season. Hopefully we don't plant on our face on this seven game road trip... Let's keep the offense going, and hopefully Anderson can finally be the answer to St. Patrick being gone.

Doesn't 'rejuvenated' presuppose that Tucker was actually once good in the first place?

He was awesome. I love that he is the prominent announcer on HNIC now though; society has suffered Bob Cole and Harry Neale long enough.

It tripped me out though, when I was watching the Leafs/Canadians game and I heard WHAT A SAVE BY PRICE.

EA Sports games have been increasingly disappointing me. Particularly in the NHL series, it feels like the exact same game every year with a few new gimmicks thrown in year in, year out; but they never seem to let the game evolve. Scrapping the gimmicks and features that were actually cool and then trying new ones that are becoming increasingly lame. First person fighting, I admit looks cool - but it will probably be gone by NHL 11 or 12, in favour of the new and riveting REFEREE CAREER MODE. Design his mustache, select the size of his gut and degree of bias in favour of the home team.

Also, Leafs :( ... Only 2 and 2/3 games into the season and a frowny face emoticon is really all I have to say - at least I feel vindicated that the Canucks have also looked abysmal so far.

You know, it's ridiculous. Finally I have a legit reason to watch as many Isles games as possible instead of just watching ebcause I love the team, and I can't even get the games where I am now. I met a kid from my area who lives a couple rooms over and is a big Isles fan too, and he was pissed about it too. We were both talkin' how much we want to watch Tavares play, and I especially want to see how the offense evolves on-ice through a good ol' eye test.

Goaltending has looked pretty solid thus far, no complaints about Rollie or Biron, though they're inevitably going to come with our defense.

Got into a drunk argument last night with a Bruins fan, who was arguing that Milan Lucic is a better player than Ovechkin. I mean, I agreed that Lucic is a legit awesome force at this point in the league (and he can beat the fuck out of pretty much anyone), but he is not Ovie. No one is AO status in this league; you could argue a few guys at or around his level, but these days no one is touching him offensively.

There were a bunch of players I rattled off as better than Lucic at this point (Malkin, Crosby, Ovie, Thornton, Heater, Kovalchuk, Zetty, Datsyuk), and he just dismissed all of them. Fuckin' Boston fans, they never listen to reason.

I've actually been tempted to make a list of all the things missing from NHL 10 that would add to the realism. It's harder to think of on the spot, but I know I've thought of at least 50 things they could and SHOULD do.

Hahaha, gotta love Jim. I know the actual quality of play-by-play has improved over the years (sentences sound like full sentences instead of words being plucked and put together), Jim was still the best.

I really don't see how anyone could be entertained by the Be A Pro, it's a complete mystery to me. And why has fighting all of the sudden become such a big deal? I admit, it's one of the few times I will shout while watching a game, but Christ, it shouldn't be the focal point of the whole effing thing. It feels like EA is constantly trying to appeal to the American market, when it's really non-existent.

You'd think Bettman ran EA Canada too

Well, it's still only the first loss of the season. Give it time - we just beat the Bs 4-3 and the Leafs 4-1. Okay, so the Bs have stunk so far this season and the Leafs have not been a good Hockey Team for a while now, but since we were 28th in the whole NHL last season, we've come a long way so far :)

Anderson seems to be playing good in goal and the rest of the team seems to be settling in nicely. Can't wait to get Salei back, but this "back" injury looks like it could be pretty serious, with no official word on the timetable for his return.

Let's hope it's not an Eric Chavez style injury...

We were 2 and 1. Since then we're undefeated coming up to the middle of one of the longest road streaks in franchise history. I gotta say, we look damn good. I'm interested to see ESPN's power rankings this week. We went from 19th to 13th last week, and we're bound to make another good jump this week. It's early, but I'm getting pretty damn excited about the team this year.

Anderson seems to be playing good in goal and the rest of the team seems to be settling in nicely. Can't wait to get Salei back, but this "back" injury looks like it could be pretty serious, with no official word on the timetable for his return.

Let's hope it's not an Eric Chavez style injury...

Anderson is dominating at goalie! That's a big part of why we're playing as good as we are. I think Budaj was a big part of the bad season last year. Now that we've got a strong starter, things are rolling so much more smoothly. And the team is so damn young too! They're playing this well and half the team is fresh out of high school! Haha. Also,
this. It may be early, but I think after these last couple years, we've finally got a reason to start getting excited Coop. :)

So far - I bet the Panthers wished that they had bought Vokoun out of his contract, to keep this guy.

Well, it can't just be down to Budaj - the defense was a lot worse in front of him and that will reflect once he's between the pipes as the backup. I think that it knocked his confidence and he lost a gilt edged chance to stake a claim for the #1 spot. Perhaps we should have given Raycroft a chance last year to make a run at the #1 spot and take some pressure off Budaj?

These young Avs will be here for a long while together, so long as they stay healthy and we win. Simple. Joe Sacco is doing a good motivational job behind the bench as well.

We'll see. I'll be happier with a win for the Burgundy & White coming out of Montreal tonight :)

Considering the Av's were by all accounts supposed to be dead last in the Western conference I would say their performance thus far is phenomenal and I would have absolutely nothing to complain about.

Hope ya'll make the playoffs

No major complaints about the Isles thus far (other than the whole Lighthouse-Wang-Kate Murray bullshit).

Tavs and KO are lookin' real good together. Moulson isn't bad when you have two great young players on the line.

I'm disappointed about the continued healthy scratches for Tambellini and Jack Hillen thus far, but I'm hoping (as one fan suggested) that it might just be a ploy to get Sutton and Jon Sim more playing time in hopes that they'll showcase something decent for a trade...but nobody wanted Sim when we waived him last year (because as I've said for a long time, he fucking sucks)..I don't know what Scott Gordon is thinking. This really is a make-or-break year for Tambells as an NHL-caliber player. He's got to prove this year that he can produce at a decent level, otherwise he'll be out of a job soon enough.

Rob Schremp hopefully will pan out though. Not too bad so far.
