I was in Best Buy today just dicking around and not expecting to buy anything when I came across in the PC games aisle a package that included Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics. I have always been curious about the series but until now I didn't see much opportunity to play it unless I searched on Ebay or Amazon.
Has anyone else played it, and if so what can I expect out of it? Do you think it's better than Fallout 3 in terms of storyline? (because obviously graphics won't contend) Can't wait for it to load so I can kill monsters in the wasteland old style.

I heard it's almost identical in play style to 3, besides the FPS view and graphics. Is that true?

There is no instruction booklet. Seriously it's just the disc in the case. Hopefully there are some online because I just tried playing and you're right in that I'm not sure how everything works and I didn't see any in game option that shows the controls.

The whole game can be played with the mouse alone, so the controls option is not needed.
The first 2 games are definitely better than Fallout 3. Most people nowadays love FPS so they worship F3.

Kinda. You can play it all with a mouse, just like the guy above me said. It's like a mix of RTS/turned based thingy.

Ok when you start Fallout 1, set your intelligence down to 1 and get ready to laugh.

Fallout 2 is my favorite out of the entire series, including Fallout 3.
It didn't have the graphics, but it had the story.
Sounds like my kind of game. I'm going to go through the first one before the second, but I will have higher hopes for it.
Best Buy you say?
I have the originals, but I'm about to mail them to another NG member who wants to play.
Yeah, Best Buy for 20 dollars. I've been trying to play but there's something going on with my screen resolution because my screen is constantly turning black so I gotta fix that up, but otherwise I've enjoyed killing the few rats I've seen so far. Gonna continue on.

What happens? I remember if your intelligence was below 5 or something in Fallout 3 and you spoke to this Protectron in Roosevelt academy it would say you're special and lead you to class or something like that...Anywho I really wanna play these games, look like a lot of fun.

Fallout 3 is not a shooter, it never has been designated to be one, it just has shooting elements in it.

I'm pretty sure there are at least 40 weapons that are guns.

And your Point is?
its not a shooter, even though it has guns and what not. combat is really meant to be in V.A.T.S. unless its melee.

I liked Fallout 3 better, mainly because it was an FPS instead of whatever you could classify Fallout 1 and 2 as...

Your character won't even be able to form words let alone sentences. And everyone in the game will remind you of your retardation.

GRAMPY BONE!!!
I think that's what he was called... he was my favorite character from Fallout 2. I was hoping to see a refrence to him in the 3rd, but I've yet to find it. :(
Sweet ass games... I've never played Tactics though.

In the original games, you had to find actual solutions to your quests. You had to work with other people, and regularly needed their help (or manipulated them into doing it for you). In Fallout 3, you just shoot your problems away. You can't do that in the originals.
For example, in Fallout 1, there is a rowdy gang of teenagers, and they regularly abuse the townsfolk. By working with a bar owner (his wife was beaten by one of the members) and the shop owner (he has good morals, and he's the enemy of the casino owner) you will be able to lure them into a trap to kill some of them, but mostly just make sure that they stay in line. Scare them straight, per se. About the casino owner, he is a bad guy. He uses the gang to do his bidding, if they are competent enough for the job. If you tried to just kill them, you'd be shot dead. I found two of them alone, and I had a gun. They still killed me with ease. You gotta use wits, not strength.
My PSN ID is xscoot. Crazy, huh?

I guess I bought the same package. I've played through all of them, and I fricken love em. I even saw Brotherhood of Steel on sale for about 2.50 $, and bought it. Boy does it suck hard. "Let's throw cusswords and hookers in! And some awesome hard music like Six n shit! This'll be awesome!"
It's sucks.
I'm back, I guess.

Do yourself a favor, patch Fallout 2 up to what it requires to run the Restoration Mod.
Basically, in this mod some guys from Blackisle put everything that they left out from the original game.
It is an amazing update, and is really necessary to play the game.
Also, DO NOT PLAY THE GAME UNPATCHED. You will probably not be able to beat it due to glitches.

Sorry, the real link to the Restoration Mod is here.
The fixes there are important after installing it.
